Carb Questions: "net" huh?
My body responds to low/med carb dieting extremely well (as most people's do). Something I've always been confused about is the so-called "net" carb counting that seems to be popular. By this I mean that if a nutrition label reads:
carbohydrates: 17g
fiber: 3g
sugars: 5g
sugar alcohols: 7g
some would say that it has only 7g "net" carbs. Is it correct to count carbs this way? I always use the carb value as my intake value; in this case 17g. Am I overestimating how many "real" carbohydrates I am taking in, and if the fiber and sugar alcohols are negligable, why is that so? Aren't they carbohydrates or do their slow digestion make them non-existant? Any help on this matter would be appreciated.
