Carb Questions: "net" huh?

My body responds to low/med carb dieting extremely well (as most people's do). Something I've always been confused about is the so-called "net" carb counting that seems to be popular. By this I mean that if a nutrition label reads:

carbohydrates: 17g
fiber: 3g
sugars: 5g
sugar alcohols: 7g

some would say that it has only 7g "net" carbs. Is it correct to count carbs this way? I always use the carb value as my intake value; in this case 17g. Am I overestimating how many "real" carbohydrates I am taking in, and if the fiber and sugar alcohols are negligable, why is that so? Aren't they carbohydrates or do their slow digestion make them non-existant? Any help on this matter would be appreciated.

IMO, i would count the example you gave as what it is; 17g carbs towards my daily carb intake. However, i would also pay attention to the amount of fiber and sugars since i'm cutting, and try to make sure the carbs i DO take in are "whole" carbs, such as fiber and complex carbs...not just sugar.

just my 2 cents

to get my carb counts I just take total calories and subtract fat calories and protein calories. That way macros always add up to 100% and I ddont have to worry about net carbs an what to count.
