I want a nicer butt...squats??
I'm already pretty satisfied with my behind, but I want to tighten it up a bit. What's good for your butt? Also, what is the proper way to do squats?

The compound exercises like deadlifts, squats, and leg presses are very effective for the glutes. I have always found that the isolation exercises aren't as effective at shaping a nice butt area as those big compound exercises.

Yeah pretty much all the ladies here have said it.
I do:
dumbbell (50lbs) squats (regular and plie/ballerina)
dumbbell (50lbs) reverse lunges (though im sure any kind of lunge works)
Leg press machine - loaded weights I like more
Hack Squat machine
Stiff-legged deadlifts with barbell
Back extension machine (works your lower back and glutes)
Weighted step-ups
As someone also said above you have find lots of great exercises on the "exercises" page. Helped me!

Squats are good, the wider the stance the better it targets your butt. Lunges, deadlifts, especially straight leg deadlifts, single leg deadlifts, single leg romanian deadlifts, cable kickbacks. The are many different exercises, running hills is also a good idea to burn fat and to get your glutes working.

Things that be good for your butt are all those heavy compound lifts that hits your posterior chain muscles (deadlifts, squats, RDLs, leg press etc). Lunges and step ups (as long as you engage your glutes) are also good.
For cardio - things that develops rump tissue are those exercises where you require 'thrust' - so things like sprints (especially up hill or through sand), HEAVY cycling (up hill). And stairs (as long as you don't just use your calves! )...
To answer your question on the proper way to do Squats - READ ME

She's absolutely right. Sprinting and running is mainly powered by your body?s biggest muscle: the gluteus maximus. Sprinting can give your butt a non-surgical lift with just a few weeks. Your hamstrings and calves help your glutes to propel you along, so they will also receive a good tone up. I use to run all the sprinting events for my track team(100, 200, 4x100, and 4x200). As you can see, it has gotten me a great rump

As stated above...sprinting is great for lifting...but you might end up with a man butt....sigh like mine...high and somewhat hidden when wearing jeans...so to put some mass on the buns...like any other muscle you need to lift heavy..but its a muscle that is strong and used alot so you have to do a massive amout of reps to really feel it. so i suggest doing squats, straight leg dl, and lunges...you'll it the hams to but then again without good hams ur ass will but like breats with not nipples so yea. also keep these exercised anywhere between 55-70% of max weight because you'll need to rep these out. you can even add a giant set of weightless jumping squats. good luck lol

A nicer butt
As a female, a glute and leg workout is so important. Its not what exercises to do but how many times per week to do a lower body workout. Since women have the most troubles in the lower body, doing workouts for this area 2 to 3 times per week is great. Make each workout different though, that is the key.

Personally, I've found the opposite to be true. Squats, deadlifts, etc. add size and strength, but my 'bottom line' was always looking a bit droopy (even with cardio and proper diet) until I started performing regular isolation exercises like hip hyperextensions, pelvic lifts, and scissors.

I love weighted lunges, stiff-legged deadlifts, squats, leg press, and stair mill (or real stairs and hills) for butt shapers.
Dont underestimate the power of stretching! stretch out your muscles in your legs (YOGA) and everywhere else and it can make your butt stand out.
From my experience it can help lean you out.
I love my butt, and that's what I do. it's probably my favorite part of me (the only one at the moment )

Don't mean to butt in (get it - twas a pun) but (couldn't resist) the best "glutes" on women I have ever seen in any gym are those on women who use the stair climber. But if the OP wants to know what's good for butts...I would say an ashtray

i just posted this in the thread below this one -- for glutes i do romanian deadlifts supersetted with weighted hyperextensions, holding at the top of the rep (and squeezing) for a count of 4. do 3-4 sets of 8-12 reps. i do these after doing squats/hack squats supersets.

I found isolation work really helps sculpt that upper curve. I like the Lotte Berk DVD, High Round Assets in addition to heavy squats and SLDLs.

I've noticed everyone saying lunges and I do agree they are one of the best but to really hit it home and target those saddlebags I've just re-introduced walking lunges.
Seriously try these.

squats deadlifts lunges pretty much what everyone has said here.
but another on i found was great for me was using a fit ball by resting your ankles on the ball and lift your butt up and roll the ball in to touch your butt then rolll it back and lower you butt, hurt like a bitch but worked like a charm! works hams and abs too.
