codeine painkillers before gym?
i've taken over the counter painkillers that have little paracetamol codiene in them what bout a higher dose, at least if my back or arms are sore i can still do leg press and work my hams or the stationary bike, the problem is i heard that at a higher dose it can make you tired, the over the counter stuff has about 16mg of codiene which doesn't make me tired however my doc could give me more, anyone know how much would be too much?

you might want to be careful because even though codeine is a very milld opiate you can still become dependent on it and if you do and experience withdrawls your muscles will REALLY be hurting then. i dont know how strong theyd be with codeine but i have experience from other kinds of opiates and its not fun by any means

You are going down a bad path...taking painkillers laced with sedatives in order to perpetuate over training is not a good idea.
Take a day or two off...

um, I cannot suggest taking an opiate every day. Besides, you'll build a resistence really quickly if you're using it everyday.
Just use them recreationally, m'kay? Remember, if you can't go 2 monthes without something, you're addicted to a certain degree!

dude, I just got off perks from my disc problems, I'm getting mad headachs now b/c I was poppin um like candy. yeah opiates are the sh!t, but it sucks when you become dependent, both physically and worst of all, psychologically. I stopped relying on them to get rid of my pain issues. Instead of drugs, try foam rolling before and after the gym - good way of working out muscle tension and soreness.
http://www.performbetter.com/catalog...FoamRoller.pdf ---if link doesnt work just google foam rolling
you can ice too at home or do a contrast bath if you have access to any sort of physical therapy/training room facilities (2 min cold, 1 min hot, repeat 10 times).
Hope this helps,
Steveo

Another danger is that pain is an indicator of injury. If you are dulling your sensing of pain, you can seriously hurt yourself while training and not know it. You need to feel pain so you know when to back off. The only time I think it's ok to take painkillers is before bed, and even then, not codeine!

yea...thats why i have such a big issue with people getting cortizone shots. you're just gonna destroy the tendon/ligament more if you cant feel the pain

If you have a legitimate reason then ok but if you?re just taking them to deal with the pain of weight lifting maybe try finding a new hobby because it sounds like bodybuilding isn?t for you.

One of the worst things you can do is associate an addictive substance with an activity. A couple examples:
-I smoked weed before going to the movies a couple times, since then I didn't want to go unless I could smoke first.
-I took Xanax before work to make time fly and after that day time seemed to crawl without them and all I could think about was taking more.
-Countless other things with painkillers, I pretty much associated everything with Vicodin and was EXTREMELY addicted because I couldn't get them off my mind.
Long story short, even if you start with innocent intentions you may feel like "it won't feel the same to lift without them". Tylenol after you lift is all I would suggest. Any NSAIDs will hinder growth, so stay away from Ibuprofen, Naproxen Sodium, etc.

i used to be hooked on pills but wasnt working out at the time. a year ago i took a few pills during the day for a toothache then went to work out and it was terrible. they make you week and kill your natural test production. not a good idea they only should be used for extreme pain

The thing i would be most concerned about is the APAP.
If nothing else, at least the hepatotoxicity would be a drawback.
Opiates are a nasty path to go down. I speak from experience.

You are a complete idiot. Studies were actually done (that I have) on mind and muscle and they show that taking pain killers delay protein synthesis. http://www.mindandmuscle.net/forum/i...howtopic=35187
So when you're depressed, do you turn to other forms of drugs so you don't have to deal with your problems then too? If you can't handle the rigors of bodybuilding on a daily basis and need pain killers to take the edge off the soreness, I suggest you take up golf...or invest in 10g of creatine monohydrate per day stacked with 3 servings of optimum nutrition 5000mg BCAAs per day, THAT will take the edge off the pain

are you serious? That is not good for you, and it's not good for muscle growth.
if you have soreness, take antioxidants before a workout, like grape seed extract

cortisone doesnt kill the pain its the lidocaine they mix in with it, if anything it hurt more when i got 2 shots in my shoulder. damn impingment and calcified tendonosis.
the idea is to stop training and do a few weeks of physio. works a charm
