Advice on working out

Hi,

I was just wondering: If your work
- requires you to travel a lot
- requires you to be far away from home
- forces the nearest gym to be very remotely accessible

How can we keep to working out?

Since you are always traveling, you can't really invest in barbells or dumbbells and the likes (you are not seriously thinking about taking them with you when you get assigned to other states, right? Even if you argue that a pair of dumbbells are all you need, you still need to be concerned about the load on the dumbbells. I mean, how heavy can you go on dumbbells?

Since you cannot stick to ONE place for long, you cannot really commit to a gym membership.

With all these perceived limitations, how does a bodybuilding keep in shape and further enhance his physique?

I guess you squeeze it in where/when you can is the simple answer. Also, if you're traveling alot, there is a sticky at the top of this page that has people rating alot of different gyms in different cities. If you know the hotel you're going to stay at, look up gyms in that area.

I'm a manufacturers rep that covers three states, OR, WA, and AK and have to intertain sometimes twice a day. I have to travel to other states and for trade shows and business. With all that I've managed to eat clean and train like hell.

I belong to 24HR Fitness and LA Fitness which together cost me less then $200 a yr. If they aren't available, I will go to any gym that's available and pay a drop in fee. Some even have weekly rates that are quite reasonable.

Most all restaurants, especially trains like Red Robins, Outbacks, Olive Gardens, etc will fix anything I want anyway I want. Sooooo....... What's the problem?

Whenever I've had to travel for work I just used a local gym. I haven't yet come across any gyms that don't allow you to just pay for one day or a week. It is hardly economical to do it that way its the most expensive way to do it fee wise but if you're committed you'll do it.

It all boils down to your level of commitment. As others have posted, find a gym (they're everywhere), pay the day rate, and train. The nutrition angle is a bit harder to deal with, but as oldsuperman says, it can be done.

Are you traveling by car or by plane?

If by plane, then, as someone said, rubber bands can at least be helpful if used properly. Chairs, luggage, phone books, a cinderblock or bricks you find outside... a gallon jug filled with water. Where there's a will...

If by car, then a folding bench and a set of take down dumbells. I've carred mine with me to vacation spots before. I just load them all onto my two handles and put them in the back. I know it's a little bulky, but if you're committed then you'll do it. Four 25s, four 10s, four 7.5s and four 5s should make just about any combo you could want. I also have four 2.5s (but no 1s, dangit!!! LOLOL). My bench folds up enough to put under a bed, so I can easily get it into the trunk of my car. You can buy sets of dumbells that come in a carry case to make it even more convenient, though 25s won't be included.

A set of Selectech dumbells would be even easier to transport. The 1090s are on my Xmas wishlist; they're not too bad on Ebay. I'd also take a set of Powerblocks, though, even though they are a lot more bulky.

I used to travel alot for work and I found that some hotel gyms do have adequate equipment to get a good workout. Sometimes you do have to get creative though. Also like others have said, most local gyms will allow you to pay a one day rate. I even found some that wouldn't charge me at all to train for an hour.

As another poster mentioned,I was going to say join the YMCA. Personally I am travelling out of town this weekend and am going to use the YMCA in the city I will be in as my membership allows me to use any location. Not sure about the stipulations or limitations but I will double check.

I have to travel a lot and TRY to do what Old Supe does, but don't always (or lately, often) succeed. More often than not I follow a process I call "progressive relativity": get what I can from the hotel's "fitness centre" and eat as well as I can by ordering the leanest thing on a given menu. Of course, I don't plan to compete again; this is all to look and feel good so I don't sweat it (pun intended) too much. If I am in a given place for a week or more I will check out the local gym and do a more serious workout there.

Basically, you quit training, you eat garbage and get fat or at least I did. Then when you are back to a normal life you find it hard to get back to the gym. I was working 60-80 work weeks and traveling frequently. I started out good, but every time I went to an out-of-town gym, they wanted $5-$20 for a day pass and that can add up fast. On the positive side, you get to meet a lot of cool people you'll never see again.

After awhile, I was getting migraines from the work stress and I would come back to the hotel and just go to sleep.

I found it hard to eat healthy on the road, especially at lunch time, but from what I've read below, it can be done.

My problem now is that I am now working from home and trying to get back into going regularly.

I am really curious, how or what do you order? I would like to know what to say.

One more question, with regards to entertaining, I've found that when I am with women they take extreme offense if I am ordering sensible meals and show restraint when ordering. For example, I was with 4 women and I was the only male, the waitress comes to the table offering desert, rattling off all the items. While the women were commenting delightfully on each item mentioned and exchanging their choices, it was my turn to order and I declined. Suddenly all the women rescinded their orders and requested the check. We all left in a strange silence.

Every hotel I've stayed at has a fitness center. Normally, these consist of some treadmills, an "all in one" weight machine, and in some cases some DB's. With a little creativity, I'm able to create some taxing workouts with this equipment.

These hotels also usually offer complimentary breakfast buffetts, where I can pick up milk for my protein drink (I usually pre-portion some whey powder and creatine into snack sized ziplock bags), as well as fresh fruit, oatmeal, OJ, etc.

I'd hate to live off of hotel fitness centers, but they'll do in a pinch!
