So...are that many investors really pulling out their money and putting into cash accounts?
Seriously, is all that investor bs that is constantly fed to the common person "stay the course" "don't sweat the moves, the market always recovers" not believed by those who do this for a living? For the markets to drop this much, there is a lot of selling going on and not just John Q Public divesting his retirement.
Why are the big money managers selling? Basically creating a stock based 'run on the bank' - more greed?
I just put some more $$$ in my investment account today (should be ready to buy tomorrow) and am going to buy some cut rate stocks.

yep, institutional investors with a low tolerance for risk are getting out of stocks and into treasury securities (bonds), precious metals, commodities, etc. there is major turmoil going on, and it will stay this way for quite some time. I haven't increased my contributions to my 401(k) or anything, but i do agree this COULD be a good time to buy. I'm not making any IRA contributions but i'll keep putting 7% of my salary in my 401(k).

My 401k contributions haven't changed in all of this. We have grown accustomed to living on the amount after taxes and 401k removed, and one of two things will happen:
1 - Markets will rebound strongly before we retire and all the money we invested in lean times will be worth much much more
- OR -
2 - The markets will totally collapse and with them, western civilization, in which case I won't care about 401k or money in general as by that point I would have already liquidated my entire life savings to buy the last loaf of bread due to runaway inflation.
I figure either way, I'm covered.

Canada, right?
Wait for me!
All kidding aside, I have more than a few friends who are seriously considering moving out of the US for the many political and economic issues that they feel are too serious to abide by and do nothing.

oh i hear ya Ice, i was just telling you that you might not want to dive right in head first and invest in any individual stocks right now that you think could be at a "bargain rate." Make sure to do your homework just like with any other investment. Check the P/E ratio, recent earnings statements, etc.

Well I don't know about you, but people up here already have back up plans... On where to fall back to.
*****
You're forgetting Option 3...
The Feudal system returns, and we all become Serf's working for the large companies and land owners.
*****
Ultimately I think you're right about #1...
But I don't think you'll see that next economic boom until after the baby boomer generation is at least 51% dead... They've got a MASSIVE amount of US equity locked up in their savings... When they die it will go back into the markets again when their children spend the money into the cycle...
Then we'll transfer it all over to Saudia Arabia in 5-6 years time, and be right back to talking about this fun and exciting Feudal system we're building up to!

My suggestion...
Liquor and Home Spice Making companies...
No matter what has been going on in this company liquor (Not Beer) always improves in sales, the worse the economy gets.
And home spices... With no one going out to eat anymore as that's the first luxury to go... And the fact that most people thing that cooking is just about making food get hot with seasonings...
People will be buying a lot more seasonings to make that hunk of top round taste better!

agreed yet once again. very good point. there will be no significant growth in our economy overall for quite a few years. lucky for me i work at a place with lots of government work, so we are in no fear of failing. a lot of other friends of mine, however, better start looking for more stable jobs because inflation is still going to remain high compared to salaries.

Imagine a post Katrina environment, but instead of just in one city, across the entire US. No gas, no food, no basic goods........

We're not even considering the HUGE looming spectre of the failed social security system. If this economic issue right now doesn't bankrupt the US gov't, then social security in a few years will.

But economically... Social Security's projected failure in 2042, won't be that big of a belly up...
Basically what it means is that for us, "Don't count on SS for your retirement."
Imagine if we would have Privatized SS like Bush wanted to, and then the Markets did this...

Actually Obesity is the #1 cause of Preventable illness...
So perhaps they should tax everyone who has a Body Fat % over 25%?
Or how about the Government Buys out McDonalds, BK, KFC Taco Bell et al, and alters their menu so it's nothing but Salads, and fruit juice?

If you thought the voting seniors carried a lot of weight, imagine how pissed they would be if their social security checks bounced.
Do you think that people will calmly take the politicians saying "we know you've been paying social security taxes your entire working life, but truth of the matter is that all that money went to fund the retirement of others and there is nothing that we can give you except some food stamps" ????

But that's 2042... Around my 72nd birthday it should go empty.... So really if there's a generation to give a damn, it's us...
SS was never intended to be a 100% retirement plan... It's meant to be supplemental.
I mean heaven forbid we have to be bothered to take care of our elderly...
(In this case the elderly being me.)
I've lived my entire life with the understanding that at some point I'll have to take care of my parents in some capacity...
Yeah it's unfair that I lose some $130+ a month to the SS system, if it won't be there for me very much...
But really by that point... The program will be over 100 years old...
Name something else in our government that made it 100 years before politicians started wiping their ass with it...
Hell you can barely make that statement for those pesky little scribblings called the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.
The "Little People" of this country have been getting shafted by the politicians and large corporations/land owners for the majority of the history of nation.
Until we remember why we have those second ammendment rights, that will never change for more than a few brief moments in history.
