New to lifting..tips?

Hey ladies!

I was advised to move this here to avoid harassment from the teen section! haha

Ok here's my deal...

I'm still living at home since I'm not quite 18 yet, and my mom is one of those women who think ALL women should be cardio bunnies and never touch a weight in their lives. She gets upset and we have gotten in a lot of fights because I try to tell her even women should lift weights. She refuses to read articles supporting my side and continues to limit my weight lifting. She already tells me that I'm trying to look like a boy and no one will like me =P haha

With that, I have only ever been able to use 5 lb weights. I would say I've gotten pretty decent results with those..but I'm tired of them! As soon as I'm 18 I want to get a membership at a gym so I can lift HEAVY! And do it without her nagging me.

Now, I guess I just want to know...everything you know haha...What should I start with when I start lifting heavier weights? Do I need any equipment besides weights (like for safety, etc.)?

Also, does anyone have good ideas for things I could lift that I'd have around the house? I don't have too much money to spend on equipment..and may not have much for a gym membership when the time comes =P So homemade equipment idea's would be awesome too!

I'm totally new at this obviously so any help would be appreciated!

Thank you much =)

Actually I've tried to join a gym and you do have to be 18 around here =( My friend is a teen and goes all the time by herself (or takes me with occasionally but it costs me money every time and I can't afford that!) but her parents are registered there as well. They just got a family package.

Well, if you're gonna join a gym, they'll have the equipment you need. In the meantime, try doing pull ups, goblet squats (you might want to google those) or zercher squat wich you can do with basically anything heavy, and push up variants (t nation features an article on every single push up invented, and even shows you how to prepare yourself for single armed push ups)

You're a kid. As you grow up, you're gonna slowly and steadily learn that one's gotta do what one's gotta do in order to achieve what they want. That there's no need for everyone around you to support you, or agree with you.
Also, you'll learn that "tell me all you know" doesn't work. There's no easy answers to life. Read the noob thread, read the bb.com articles, check out the exercises, read some forum threads and come up with specific questions. Check out bodyweight exercises. Here:

First hit on google, whaddayaknow.
Also, can you do 50 pushups yet? No? Here's your goal for the next month.
5 lbs weights won't get you anywhere, but you can easily use 10 lbs weights just by holding both of yours in one hand. duh.
