Bodybuilding documentry in UK last night?
Anybody watch it, was on ITV?
Anyway it told the story of several bodybuilders and their lives. It was very interesting but one thing I found slightly worrying was this one parent who was weight training his 3 year old it said for anything up to 2 hours a day!
I thought it was dangerous to begin weights until your body was properly formed. I used to go to ballet classes and was not allowed on to point until I was 13 since my bones had not developed enough.
What are peoples opinions on this?

Benedict Magnusson and Gemma Taylor are the worlds strongest couple it focused on them having a baby and what will it be like when it grows up, i watched it and i found the arm wrestler 'the beast' amazing, his training was good i have not seen people do that kind of training where hes doing a 1 arm tug of war with 2 big guys on the other end - he is very strong.
Good programme, it was not out to run anyone down just focusing on strength and muscle, i liked the martial artist as well who could smash bricks. About training when your 3 yr old, it was not really training hardcore it was more getting her used to the dumbell, the weight was tiny, and to say his other daughter had been 'training' since she was 5 yr old it hasnt seemed to do her any harm, she can squat quite a bit. I liked that programme.

I'd have to watch this "weight training" of the 3 year old before I could really comment. My daughter used to goof around with my mom's 1 and 3 lb weights when she was that young...so she was capable, we just didn't do anything structured with her.
What do you think about the 3 year olds in classes like gymnastics? Or climbing all over playground equipment? That's a lot of bodyweight "work" at a young age. But all the skills learned are through play.

True, obviously I don't know all the facts so am making a judgement based upon only what I have seen. It just smacks to me a bit of the parents making the children do it not because the children really want to do it. However I have no problem with ENCOURAGING fitness, maybe if there was more of that you would not see so many overweight children!

yea I saw that amazing lots of dedication!!
I think it is good like you said to encourage them at a young age obviously not over do it. Even in the UK there is huge increase in overweight children as there is more emphasis on junk food and computer games!

Well, remember I didn't actually WATCH the show. I just don't necessarily think it's a bad thing. If the kid was always miserable or what they were doing was definitely dangerous, I'd be against what they were doing.
At three, a kid can't possibly know what they want and there's no way to tell what they will end up being interested in as they get older. Parents will try to mold them to do what they're interested in because that's what they know. That's how kids end up in dance, gymnastics, swim lessons or whatever at 3. Most of the time, kids seem to enjoy the social and physical activity in those lessons. I do think if a kid seems to hate what you've chosen for them that you should find something else to involve them in though.

Parents SHOULD be making kids do things that are good for them regardless of whether they like to or not. "You WILL eat your vegetables. You WILL do your homework. You WILL participate in physical activity." Parents do need to compromise a bit to make things as pleasant as possible of course (make the kids' preferred veggies, help with homework, help them discover physical activity they enjoy). From what I can tell, letting Little Johnny do EXACTLY what Little Johnny wants is effin' up a lot of kids in lots of ways. Unhealthy lifestyles just scratches the surface. But that's a bit outside the scope of this thread. LOL

About this kid training at 3, it was like 6 reps of a very light dumbell held in both her hands, she had no grimace on her face, was not in any pain, and i got no idea what you consider hardcore if you think that is training, i got more exercise at 3 yr old in a park on the swings than what she is doing with her dad .... plus her dad seems a really nice guy who loves his kids, i dont think hes abusing them at all, maybe if he did what mini hercules dad did and put them on steroids then it would be child abuse and not good - but he isnt.
I reccomend you all watch the programme before saying the training was a bad thing.

What I actually said was I thought it was dangerous. I am no expert and I am not pretending to be. I asked for peoples opinions. I enjoy listening (reading) the opinions and thoughts of others.
This was not meant to offend anybody, there is nothing unhealthy with a discussion.
