Senior, what's your thoughts on the dress khakis?

I gradutated in '04, am a SWO now, but went through the whole gambit there. What all do you want to know about the Academy? Give some specifics of what you want to know or are you talking over all?

Personally, I don't like the concept. Professionally, of course, I wear whatever is the specified uniform.

The color scheme is supposed to make standard shipboard & maintenance stains like oil and paint less visible. . .

While true, I can forsee some E-1s, E-2s, E-3s getting yelled at for not wearing a 'clean' uniform.
I don't know if this is a rumor or not, salt water is supposed to make them turn orange?

Oh, so unlike our ACU's you hopefully shouldn't have to guard one set with your life from getting anywhere near the field for fear of it permanently looking like ass? Interesting concept, haha.

Haven't heard that, and I would seriously doubt it's possible (specifically to limit the orange effect to salt water), not to mention wildly impractical - Sailors on ships will get sprayed with salt water.

The problem with the Academy is that it is just too politcal and full of BS now. When I went there, I saw a dramatic change from my freshman year through my senior year. I have visited it a few times since I graduated and it is flipping rediculous now with how gay everything is. You get treated like such a kid there now that I think I'd have to shoot myself in the face. It's a great place to be from but a horrible place to be at.
As far as the options of what you service select from there, as long as you hit the right wickets along the way and are in high enough standing, both academically and through review boards for the different communities, as well as physically fit enough, you can do anything. As far as SEALs go, unless they have upped the billets from the Academy, the cap number was 16 for my class. There more than 60 over quallified guys running for it, but only 16 got picked. That came through the "mini-BUD/S" screaner, GPA's, and how they did on their interviews. Most of them that didn't get it or get EOD went to USMC or went with flight. Of the people that got picked, they went straight to BUD/S. It is so competetive that the ones that get selected can smoke check BUD/S. I know there have been a few that rang the bell, but most of them went threw with no problems what so ever.
I guess the biggest thing with the Academy is that it sets you up for the future. Whether you stay in or get out, you will always have a good job. I have had several "head hunters" write or call me from big corporations to see if and when I plan to get out. I have had several job offers, none of them with a starting salary of less than 120 a year and several with more than that.
Academics are tough there though. Unless you pick english, political science or some other BS major, you deffinitely have to put some time into studying. I was a Mechanical Engineer and the least credits I had was 18 for one semester and the rest were like 21-23 credits per semester.
Also, everyone has to do a sport whether it's intramurals or varsity. One thing you have to learn is time management. That's huge! Between all the military training, drill, parades, mandatory fun, briefs, school, and sports, you really don't have much free time during the week and some weekends you have to stay there just to study and catch up or get ahead on homework. Depending on your major, I've had to pick which class I was going to study for and which one I could take the hit on for tests on the same day.
What other questions do you have or anything else I can help you with?

wow, that is smart.
Also it will be much easier to stay alive seeing how the shark and stuff can't see you because you can blend into the ocean so well.
Just hope and pray the search and rescue teams have bionic vision and can the difference between BLUE and blue.

hopefully your new uniforms will be more comfortable than the AFs new ABUs. the material is very thick and doesn't breathe.
i come home everyday from work stinking and sweaty..... and i sit at a desk in an air conditioned office all day.

I went through the entire application process with the congressman and the interview with a representative from both the Air Force and Naval Academies if you have any specific questions about those. I ended up deciding not to go to either for personal reasons, so I can't really help beyond that, sorry.
The one piece of advice I can definitely give you now is to be on time with all of your paperwork. Meet every deadline in the application process, or be early.

I think I may be late to muster, but I am here to check in now. I am an Active Duty AME2 (Ejection seat and safety equipment tech) stationed here in Okinawa.
If there are any young sailors out there looking for orders take my advice, stay at sea! This shore duty thing is killing me. Very relaxing, but so boring. Especially since I am out of rate. I haven't seen an ejection seat in almost a year and it is killing me!

"Cracker Jacks" - Dress blues - will still be around. Along with the similar Dress Whites.
The "working blues" (black shirt & pants), and "summer whites" (white short-sleeve shirt & pants) will both be replaced with the year-round uniforms above.

I have some questions for the Navy people out there. I found out that a friend of mine is going in the Navy early next year. I assume they have a 'boot camp' like other parts of the service. How long is it? What would be his chances of going to Iraq? How long are the enlistments for?

The one piece of advice I can definitely give you now is to be on time with all of your paperwork. Meet every deadline in the application process, or be early.

outside of the normal college app and fitness test what do you have to do while applying
how difficult was it setting up a meeting with your congressman and what did you have to do
do you have to have them write you a recomendation

Hi. Boot camp is eight weeks long if I remember and it is in Great Lakes, IL. Depending on the time of year you go there it could be really cold or really hot. In today's world, every service member (even Sailors) have a great chance of being sent to Iraq/Afghanistan. Even myself, as an admin, is being considered for such billets. Normal enlistments are usually eight years in length, 4 years active duty and 4 years reserve. However if your friend receives a hyooge enlistment bonus, college fund, whatever, they will make your friend sign an additional year on active duty, making it 5 years active duty. Hope this helps.
