Life begins at 40 for RainSteamSpeed

I turned 40 last week. I always said I wasn?t going to be fat and forty, and oh ****! Guess what? I am fat and forty!

I blame it on starting my own business 3 years ago; I put every ounce of mental and physical effort into my new venture that every other aspect of my life went on hold, I stopped exercising and my diet went completely to hell, Typically lots of white starches, fried food and lashings of booze (to calm my troubled mind at the end of the day).

Another cost of my success was the end of my 7 year relationship with my girlfriend, dreadfully neglected and undervalued she decided she would be better off without an overweight workaholic slob like me and I can hardly blame her.

I am now about 30 pounds overweight, tired and my confidence, especially with the opposite sex, is rock bottom. My clothes don?t fit me anymore and I avoid looking in a full length mirror. In the final analysis it appears that everything that is wrong in my life right now is a result of being so out of shape. Its time to grasp the nettle and get this fixed, once and for all.

As an important part of this process I will be using this blog to record my progress, describe my mental state and (if I am lucky) get some words of encouragement from others.

The good points (stuff that helps):

The gym is 5 minutes walk from my home
I prepare all my own meals
I am not restricted by a 9-5 work schedule, I can workout whenever suits me best
I am completely driven and motivated to succeed

The not so good (stuff that makes it harder):

When I feel overworked, lonely or bored. I eat to make myself feel better emotionally
I have an active social life which usually revolves around eating and drinking
I get impatient easily

I will get some pictures and stats posted here tomorrow.

To get things started I have decided to follow the Body for Life programme for the next 12 weeks, and I will review its effectiveness after that.

And so it begins?

Well good luck to you!! I think the BFL program is a great place for you to start.

Give it the entire 12 weeks, be consistent and do not get impatient!! That impatience thing gets a lot of people -- myself included. In this game, consistency and patience are key.

Welcome!!

Week 1 Day 4

I didnt want to update til I was well underway with the programme.

So far I have followed it to the letter....

2000 cals a day over 6 meals on a 40-40-20 split
Weights: Mon, Weds, Fri
Fasted cardio Tues, Thurs, Sat

My only difficulty at the moment is getting that progression upto maximum intensity for each body part, it's not a method I have used before but hopefully that will come with more practice and experience.

My weight first thing Monday morning was 206 pounds, this morning before my cardio session I was 200. I realise some of this is the initial fluid loss ect but even so I feel a good bit leaner and carrying 6pounds less around can only be a good thing right?

Thanks for the welcomes everyone, much appreciated!

Someone asked my about my username... Rain Steam Speed is part of the title of a painting by the English Artist Turner in 1844. (Full title: Rain Steam Speed - The Great Western Railway

Its an impressionist work painted some 40 years before the Impressionist Period (as we know it) was ever thought of.

Its a piece of work that has always inspired me.... the train thundering across the landscape through rain and shine seems beautiful and intimidating at the same time. It also represents the beginning of a new age and a bright new future.

So it seemed a suitable icon for the weeks and months ahead.

Thanks for reading
