Shin Splints
I am a 49 year old male and while I am using my treadmill, I constantly get shin splints in my left leg after around 10 minutes of running. Even when I stretch before the workout and walk on the treadmill for around 10 minutes before starting the run, the shin splints occur. If I stop and rest for a couple of minutes, I can run for about 3-5 minutes and the shin splints will return again.
I even use a brace made for relieving pain for shin splints with no help. I am wondering if there is anything I can do to fix this problem or do I have to just try working around this problem? I know that I could use another type of cardio machine but really prefer the treadmill. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Maybe
Perhaps you could switch to a different type machine for cardio.

Shin splints usually require at least a day, if not 2 or 3 in order to enable you to run again without reoccurring. At least, that's my experience with them, and I'm sure everyone is different.
I should also add that proper running shoes make a big difference. If you run in an excessively pronated position...that can cause them too.

Also try and strengthen your dorsiflexor you can do it by placing some sort of resistance around a stool and placing the front of your foot under it and repetitively lifting the front of the foot up and leave the heal down.

Shin splints usually improve as the muscles warm up. If not, you have another issue on your hands.
If it is indeed shin splints, then do this:

New shoes can make a huge difference. It's worth a try!

Hey! Are you trying to put the height-enhancing shoe guys out of business?

I agree with the good running shoes. They made a world of difference for me.
Shin splints can be a pain. Just lay off for a while. That is really what is needed. Dont stretch or fiddle with it, just dont run for a week or two, get new shoes and you will be good to go.
For me, continued stretching just made it worse. When I fianally left them alone it healed in a couple weeks.
When you start up running again, as soon as you feel it coming on, stop running. Any more is just aggravating it.
Also run a bit slower, like .5mph and dont use the incline.
Best of luck.

I agree with the type of shoe. I had issues until I went to a specialty store and had them watch me while I was running. (And you do run differently on a treadmill than you do on the street or a path.) Make sure you have the right type of shoe for the type/distance that you are running.

Yep. My Aasic Nimbus 9's are great to actually run in, but suck to jog in.

Tried another shoe!
I tried changing from my ASICS running shoe to my Diadora tennis shoes and it has really helped! I'm not sure why my tennis shoes relieve the pain compare to a running shoe but as long as it helps, I don't really care why! Thanks to everyone for all the information!
