I have a GSD. Best dog ever IMO. I have a female and she refuses to run away from home. She used to live in my backyard (fenced in yard). We left for the weekend once and forgot the back gate open. When we came back the dogs were still in the yard.
Now she lives in the house but when we let her out she doesn't leave the yard (its fenced in). She knows her boundaries without even having a fence or any kind of marker.
From everything I know/have heard females make a better dog then a male.

That's awesome. I really hope to raise an obedient dog like that. I'm really passionate about the whole thing.
Sadly though I'm not home from 7:00AM to 5:00PM five days a week, so I can't spend all my time with my dog. I wish I could
He gets the odd visit from my parents and grandad during the day though. The thing that worries me the most is social isolation.

I found a breeder in SLC last night. I talked to him on the phone for about half an hour today and I'm putting a deposit down tomorrow for the next litter

GJDM. Is this your first puppy you've had to raise on your own? My GS is the first dog I've ever owned. I really hope to raise him right. Somehow I wish I could take a month of work and just train him.
Keep us updated and post plenty of pics!

We had one, he lived to be 15.
He started out as the runt and grew to be over a 100 pounds while in shape. The black on him seemed very dark compared to most, which made the gold on his cheeks and chest really stand out - he was beautiful. Not to mention extremely well behaved and friendly.
Damn, I miss my dog.

Raise on my own.... sort of. The one I had before I took care of while my step dad was TDY in South Korea with the Air Force for a year and another 6 months in Saudi Arabia too. Good ****ing dog
The breeder is going to train him while he's a pup to be a show/guard dog. I'm probably going to stud him out too

GS are awesome dogs! very smart and very loyal. I used to have one, but it died at age 14 i also have a belgian shepherd, somewhat looks like a german one, but it's really aggresive even to other ppl. my 3 year old half pittbull half dogo argentina isn't agressive at all except when it sees other dogs/cats. if you can get a good trainer for your gs you will be amazed with the results.

My parents use to breed GS's when I was a kid. I remember 3 different ones they had including a all black long haired one. We had to get rid of the last one when we moved.
I'm actually going to get one after my deck is finished in a couple weeks. A very good place to check in your area would be the police departments. They usually have the inside scoop on the best dogs in the area. I'm going to get one from a cop who breeds them himself for the force. Bro my friend got one of them and he is huge and chill as ****. Frekin monster head on him, very gentle and mellow but don't walk in the house if he doesn't know you. If you're interested I can get you a number.

Good lookin' dogs, guys.
Mine is 6.5 years old, 105 lbs and still has his nuts. Got him from a show breeder in Jersey. Extremely loyal and protective.
From my experience, you have to be a very strict trainer and constantly show this dog who's boss. Definitely not the dog for someone who is easily manipulated by puppy dog eyes. This type of dog will take advantage of you.
Extremely smart and learns commands quickly. I taught him to hold food on his nose until I tell him it's ok. Pretty cool trick to show off his obedience.

My uncle had two although I think one is dead now... god damn I love them, can't get a dog until I get somewhere to live on my own though cause my dad is allergic to dog fur. The one that I think is dead was teh coolest dog ever though, his previous owners had treated him really badly so we weren't supposed to pet him or anything, but he always obeyed my uncle and when he took his other dogs out (also had a spaniel and a red setter), he wouldn't run/play too much just stare around making sure my uncle's other dogs were alright. Or maybe he was just monging out or something, but I like to think of it romantically hahaha.

Why not get a German Shepard brought over from Germany again? They probably have the best bloodlines of the dog over there and have a greater history in training them etc
