Red face First time dis-located right shoulder

Hey guys,

Im 19, and never broke a bone or dislocated any joint in my body. I try to keep as fit as possible and play a lot of sport.

Friday night I was at the gym and was doing dumbell press. I was going for my last rep when i couldnt lift it up and the 20kg dumbell pulled my arm down and dis-located my right shoulder. Hyperextended it.

If you can imagine pushing it up, not being able to get that last lift and it falling down past my chest and my shoulder dis-locating....as soon as it fell out of the socket my hand automatically dropped the dumbell i sat up and it fell back into place. I never felt anything like that before and i stopped all lifting that night. I was rotating my shoulder 5 minutes later in a rotating motion and it fell out of the socket again.

Come 2 days later it feels a bit better i was going to go to the doctor but it feels better but noway would i lift now, but im not sure as to how long it will take until it's 100%. Ive read here in the forums that once you pop your shoulder you have re-occuring problems and i really hope thats not the case.

Ive been taking fish oil to help with the healing and just resting it as much as possible.

Do you guys think im worrying too much and it will heal or am I taking this too lightly?

I just want it to heal quickly and healthy

Go to a MD and get a MRI and xray of your shoulder to make sure you have not caused permant damage. Waiting could be the worse thing with that type of injury because your shoulder is filled with unforgiving tissues that tear rather easily when in an uncompromised situation.

dislocated shoulder

You will need an orthopod to refer you to a physical therapist who will guide you through a set of appropriate exercizes for rehab on your shoulder. You should make every effort to not do exercizes that will cause another dislocation. You may or may not eventually need surgery (done through a scope) - depends on how bad the injury is and what you do now.

Thanks for the replies. Im just at work now, i work with computers full time 9-5 mon-fri and type all day. My shoulder was giving me a bit of sharp pains this morning while just even moving the mouse.

It kind of clicked back into place id presume with a sharp pain, and I have more rotation in the shoulder now with less pain, which is a good sign.

In regards to see'ing a doctor i will have to leave it till this friday night or saturday morning. As im unable to swing it around full time work without taking time off.

I definately wont be lifting in the meantime and will try to rest it as much as possible. Other then fish oil what else can i consume, or what soft exercises do you guys reakon will help with the healing before the doctors visit.

Dislocated my left shoulder when 5 guys tackled+landed on me in a football game, it fell back in place but it was never the same+ weaker. Dislocated it once or twice from punching people after that.

Hey Ryan,
The exact thing that happened to you happened to me (browse around for my one and only previous post on this fourm). I'm waiting for an MRI, but pretty much already know what my injury is - I'm just waiting for a confirmation.

What we both have is most likely a LABRAL Tear. If I were you, i'd visit a shoulder specialist so that he could just check you and confirm whether you do have a labral tear. Sorry to say, and not to scare you, but the only way of fixing this problem is surgery. In my honest opinion, my shoulder doesn't cause any pain whatsoever and is probably a small tear however i still will need surgery for it.

Cheers
