Why is alcohol so bad for intended results? What specifically does it do to counteract diet and workouts? Is it just the calories or something more?

lol I couldn't believe it when I saw how many replies there were to my thread! Thanks heaps for all the replies. I've tried stopping all together....but just can't seem to do it. It's not that I go out drinking - no babysitters! But I find I use it as a stress relief after dealing with the kids....so bad!! I gotta say though that more than 2 glasses of wine and I feel it and regret it! Usually it's just 1 or 2 drinks a few nights a week, but I do think if I could cut it out I would see better results....just have to find the will power :P

I totally agree w/ya about a stress relief from the kids! But, I just feel too crappy the next day. That's one of the things I love about the gym. It's my stress relief! It's MY time, I take my youngest w/me to the kids room(my other 2 are old enough to stay home) and I can be all alone.
Of course, after about 4 hrs they kida want me to come back and get my kid...sheesh

Here are some of the reasons Tom Venuto says not to drink:
1) Alcohol suppresses the body's ability to burn body fat
2) Alcohol interferes with proper digestion and absorption of vital nutrients
3) Alcohol dehydrates you (that's why I try to drink extra water when I drink)
4) Alcohol decreases natural testosterone production

If I'm drinking alcohol it must be a cheat day so I'm not concerned about counting calories from it. My only concern with limitations has to do with how far away my next weight training day is because I don't want dehydration (or a hangover!) to interfere with that! LOL
When I'm not trying to become progressively leaner, I am more likely to have a glass of wine or two or some kind of cocktail on a somewhat regular basis (not daily or necessarily even weekly). I kinda go through phases when it comes to how appealing alcoholic beverages are to me.

I really think that people who drink regularly have NO CLUE what even small amounts of alcohol do to you. I used to drink quite a bit pretty often and felt "just fine" the next day. But I didn't have anything to guage performance off of, really. Now I do have something to use to guage performance and it makes drinking seem so much less worth it.
It's kinda like how people feel "just fine" eating junk all the time, start eating clean with no cheats for a while and then don't realize how much better eating clean was making them feel until they eat a bunch of junk again, I guess. LOL

Wow...
Props to all of you guys who keep the boozin' to a minimum. Sad to admit but I *love* to drink... omg, gin... I love it. Vodka. Rum. Scotch. Wheat Beer. Martinis all night! It's kind of hard in my industry... a lot of chefs have some sort of substance issue.
I can say with absolute certainty that this is the #1 reason I keep f*ckin up my progress. It needs to stop. I know that if I want any kind of results, I can't do it the way I'm doing now. It's just hard though...
I recently tried to say "I'm going to go 30 days without alcohol"... and failed by the 4th day, lol. Okay, maybe I shouldn't laugh, but...
Well. I guess I can try again. I should start a journal dedicated to it.

I think the services industry is like that, period. You're constantly surrounded by people out having a good time. If you work days, you get off during Happy Hour. If you work evenings/nights...perfect time to party. I used to cocktail on a river boat (was also a waitress at a restaurant for a while) and the only shift that didn't get off work and party on a regular basis were the people that got off at 8 or 9 the morning! LOL
But yeah, I totally understand that being a challenge if you socialize with people from work. Maybe you should try only giving yourself one night a week to do things like that. Even cutting back to Fridays and Saturdays and actual special occassions (Ladies Night and birthdays for people you do not give a crap about do not equal special occassions ) would be a start.

boozin
I used to drink tons..........I'm totally a wiskey girl. I love burbon. I've cut a lot of it out, but still have 2 or 3 beers once a week. I'm planning to cut that out. If i'm having a cheat I think I would rather have something sweet.
The hardest part is during the summer for me. I love going to baseball games and concerts. Something about being outside makes me want to have an IC Lite in one of those giant plastic cups!!!

Yeah... I dig. Gotta get my priorities straight. Have the muscles for sure, but also have a ton of uh "adipose tissue" (hate the F word, lol), so you can't see 'em. Sucks. I want to show 'em off!
I'll need to keep that in mind next time the ETOH is callin' my name...

my biggest downfall is drinking.... I love to drink!! I was at a wedding last night and it was open bar.... needless to say I feel like **** today. I usually don't drink during the week, but after a long week with school and work there is nothing better than a nice cold margarita!

Ya drinking is definately one of my holdbacks! I just got back home from a 4 day trip back to my hometown. Needless to say it was 3 nights full of drinking. Ugh... I am sooo bloated and crappy feeling today!
Back to the drawing board

Very seldom
I may have half a glass of wine every four months and that's when I am traveling back from Iraq. Sometimes you need something to take off the stress and edge of traveling through a dangerous place. Half a glass puts me to sleep for most of my 14 hour plane ride home.
