sleeping late and headaches
No matter what time I go to sleep, about 5 or 6 times every month I'll wake up at a ridiculous hour (like this morning) with my brain feeling like it's imploding. I also feel very warm and feverish, but my head is the worst. I feel like I need to rinse my brain off with ice water.
I don't drink but it probably looks like I have a hangover.
What could be causing this? I was thinking that maybe if I've been sleep deprived for a few days, and then fall asleep for about 12 hours, I might be waking up really dehydrated?

Dehydration could do it. Do you have allergy or sinus problems?

Are you suffering sleep deprivation? You say about sleep deprivation- so is there a pattern? No sleep - or lack of sleep - followed by headache and hotness upon awakening.
Sounds like you need to take in a good 1/2 litre of water prior to these events.Thats easier said than done unless there is a pattern.

If drinking water before you sleep is not adequate, and if it is dehydration, you might want to put a cup of water beside your bed, and set your alarm for some early time, drink the water and go back to sleep. Unless you already wake up in the night, then drink water then (I do this very often).

Are you getting too hot whilst you sleep, do you have adequate ventilation.
It could be you are dehydrated as the other ladies have already said.
If I sleep late I always get a head but I don't wake up at a rediculous hour, I just wake up early.
This doesn't happen all the time either.

I usually don't have allergy problems, but the air in my room is very thick and stuffy compared to the rest of the house, so the poor circulation might be hurting it. I'll try leaving my door open more often.
I normally drink a lot of water before I go to sleep, so I'll start leaving a glass next to my bed so that I remember to drink more whenever I wake up in the middle of the night. I'll try to get more sleep, too.
Thank you all for the replies!

Hello, had to jump in here, because you are describing me exactly. In fact, today was one of those days, where the headache actually woke me up. Extremely bad, and throbbing. I have actually been to the doctor for it, I did a sleep study, and found I have moderate sleep apnea, that I and my husband didnt even know. I tried a cpap, but gave up, that machine was more of a hastle. Anyway, I was also told, that if its not sleep apnea, it could be that you blood sugar is way too low, from all those hours of not eating. So, the first thing I do when I get up is eat (which we should do anyway, all those hours of not eating isnt good for muscles!) and I will start to feel better. So, long story short, I think its from low blood sugar. I really notice it, on the mornings if I forget to drink my shake or eat something before bed, then if I sleep in too much in the morning, I am really suffering when I wake up., so, hopefully, try to eat just before bed, and as soon as you get up. Oh, sometimes, in the middle of the night, I will even drink a bit of fat free (lactaid) milk too, that helps. Anyway, good luck to you!

Wow that's great info, thank you.
I've had the headaches but I have never associated to my low blood sugar.

Thanks
So far everything has been ok. I think it was related to the sleep (and consequent low blood sugar and dehydration) now, since it only happens on weekends (when I go to bed at 5am and wake up in the afternoon), not when I'm on my normal schedule. I felt fine this morning.
I got an air purifier for in my room too, and I don't know if it's helping, but the air feels a lot better.

Glad you're feeling better!
Eat something before you go to bed at 5 am. If you're up that long, your body still needs food.

^ Yeah, I need to work on that.. I'm usually not hungry until about 3 or 4 hours after I wake up though, and I feel uncomfortable eating if I'm not hungry. I think I just need to start going to sleep around the same time every night

If you're a night owl like me, SAYING you're going to go to bed early and actually DOING that are two different animals. LOL
So far as the eating thing goes, the problem is you're body is apparently hungry, whether it's signaling it or not. I had myself trained to only be hungry once a day for a long time. Doesn't mean my body didn't need food until then. It just had gotten used to the fact that it wasn't going to get any until then.
Just have something small like some cottage cheese and some nuts.

Yes, a good rule of thumb, is to eat something every 3-4 hours you are awake. So if one day you are awake 20 hours, you'd have 6-7 meals, and if you were awake 12 hours the next day, you'd have just 3-4 meals.

if you can have some tea I would try putting some honey in it just to help your blood sugar.
I have the same issue I hate eating when I first wake up but I make myself. During the week it's easy because I have to eat before I go out to work but on the weekends this is when it hits me hard.

Good to hear you are getting some air circulated around the room, it really does make a difference.

I have the same problem. When I sleep more then 6-7 hours a day I get a headache. The other day I slept 12 and man the migraine was horrid, but they're right in the fact that it's normally low blood sugar for me. Hell sometimes when searching for food, I'll eat crap just to temporarily level out my blood sugar. Then I'll make a protein shake to get everything balanced. But when you haven't had one for a while... it hits hard. Feel better. And I'm sure that the air circ. is helping as well.

I can't remember where all the various studies on this are but it is known that when we sleep longer than normal or past our regular waking up time (shift workers excluded due to irregular sleep patterns) that a headache may result... giving rise to "weekend migraine" etc... a solution apparently is to set your alarm for the regular time... you can go back to sleep after if you want but apparently the mere act of waking at the regular time helps with the headaches...
