bananananana
is there anyway to preserve a banana longer than normal? this is probably an extremely stupid question, but whatever. i hate how fast they go bad (ill eat if its a little brown, but not a lot), but will they stay better longer if they are in the fridge or anything??

Yea it will stay longer in the fridge. The peel will turn super brown but it will stay yellow a little longer.

If they go too brown to be eaten, put it in the freezer and then take it out when it's frozen and use it for a shake. Makes it taste like ice cream.

suspension from the stem often leads to longer preservation.

no, don't be silly. it's because the banana is more comfortable that way so it goes back into a deep slumber which makes the banana age slower.

banana are sensitive to any kind of contact, so if you suspend them, this reduces the amount of direct contact, therefore leading to less browning. Otherwise, put them in the refrigerator. The peel might turn brown quicker, but the actual fruit will still be yellow. And if the banana is too brown for your liking, you can always make some banana protein bars or shakes or breads or something of that nature.

i eat like 1-2 banana's a day in my shakes so we always buy a crap ton. if i don't finish some and they start turning brown. i just throw em in a big ziploc and freeze them. frozen banana's are perfect for blending shakes. if you add oatmeal, the frozen banana helps keep the oats from seperating from the drink so fast. this way you don't end up with a mouthfull of soggy powdery oats at the end. and it also chills the whole drink so u dont need to add ice.

Put them in a ziplock bag, trust me, they will stay ripe an extra week. I do this and I'm not exactly sure what the science of it is, I remember reading about it somewhere, but it has something to do with the chemicals the banana gives off. When those chemicals can release into the air away from the banana, the banana goes bad. If you keep the chemicals in a bag with the banana, the banana stays ripe longer, so there you go.

A family friend bought some of those "green bags" that claim that they will keep fruits and veggies fresher longer. I was skeptical but they actually work really well. I was shocked at how long the bananas stayed fresh. I will be purchasing these as well.

interesting since typically when you don't let the ethane escape, fruit ripens quicker. Ever use a banana to ripen a tomato/avocado?
