great post!
Now do you think I can build some mass. I mean I am 40 and my kids tell me I'm OLD. I mean yeah, I wanna get big and stuff, but, but I am 40. I mean really come on, I like damn buffets and cakes, does that mean I have to stop that? I can't have my morning doughnuts or partake with birthday cakes at work. Why can't I just eat anything I want and take one of those pills they sell. Will I still get big? I mean like jay cutler big. Damn I'm to old!
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GREAT POST BH.

Yes, but I'm sure sure you started no later than 34 years 364 days, so you got grandfathered into the program.

Definitely started before I turned 35, but mysteriously, I still kept gaining after.

I have only read this particular thread, and not the rest of the over 35 forum. I want to put my 2 cents into this. January 1, 2006 I weighed 510lbs. age 34. I decided I no longer wanted to be that heavy (low self-esteem issues, zero sex drive - not like anyone would want me, so I thought). Me and a grade school girl/friend were organizing our 20 year reunion. I was too embarrassed by my size, I needed to drop as much weight ASAP! I got a membership to the gym. The only experience I had with exercise prior to that was a exercise bike many moons ago. So, I got on the bike. Was pooped out after 10 minutes. Figured I did good, and left. I used over the counter diet pills (TrimSpa, Green Tea, Slim Fast, etc). Ate only 1 large lousy meal a day.
Six weeks later I came down with the flu. I ultimately quit the gym.
May was the reunion. Up until then I was slowly loosing my vision. Things got worse in the last 2 weeks of May. I was pissing every 45 minute, the pressure was so great, by the time I went, pulled out my ... well you know ... the slight touch of it caused me to lose bladder control. Severe dry mouth, EXTREMLY thirsty. I knew I had diabetes. I was dx'd on June 1st. I was told if I had waited 1 more day to check myself in, I would have went through a coma, and died. I knew I had diabetes, but didn't realize the severity of it. All I knew was, I was gonna loose my feet! I was scared. At this point I decided I was gonna live. The hospital gave me literature on the Diabetic Exchange Diet, and told me to go on a 1800 calorie diet.
One month later I asked my new doctor, "I want to go back to the gym, WHAT should I be doing?" He told me to use the machines, work on body part a one day, b the next, c the next, etc. Do the treadmill for 30 mins a day. I did what I thought was right, but I somehow knew I could be doing better. 2 months later I paid for a session with a trainer. She gave me a schedule to follow, which I did faithfully for a few months (until my next session with her).
Meanwhile, I decided to educate myself on EVERYTHING: Diabetes, nutrition, dieting, weight training, etc. Because of my constant weight loss (averaged 20lbs a month for 10 months) I was able to wean, then completely get myself off of alll my meds - though I still test my blood sugars a few times a week.
The more I lost, the more I set out to do - fitnesswise, the more I accomplished. One year after being DX'd, hrough a friend at work, I met up with her friend, who happened to be a personal trainer at a different gym. She had organized a weekly running/walking club. One thing led to another, and she offered me PT sessions at her gym. For 2 months she gave me personal 1 on 1 training, taught me form, exercises, etc.
October '06 I completed a 5 mile walk to raise money for ADA (my 1st major event)
November '07 walked 1/2 marathon in less then 4 hrs, was awarded 2nd place for my age group (35-39), also ranked 135/204.
Febuary '08 participated in my 1st 5k run. Didn't come in last, but finished in 37 minutes.
Because of different magazines, and websites like this, I started taking supplements (still experimenting).
I am down to 235lbs, a 275lb weight loss. I work out 3-4 days a week (depending on my hectic work schedule). When I do work out, I dedicate 2.5-3 hrs time between weights and cardio.
I have definite definition going on. Unfortunately, due to my old age of 35, my excess skin isn't shrinking. I base my success on the clothes fitting nicer, and they bodyfat testing done at a local college (Hydrostatic). I will probably never be featured in a magazine. I have the muscle mass, but it is hidden under layers of lose skin. I will not let this deter me, I will continue.
I am 24% bodyfat, considered "normal". I reached my ultimate goal of wearing size 36" pants (down from 64"). I am aiming by Thanksgiving of this year to get down to 17% bodyfat, which is considered "fit" (I wanna be fit, not fat!). I have a secret fantasy of squeezing into a size 32" pants (officially 1/2 my original size) - I have a couple displayed as a constant reminder.
I am going to start studying to become a personal trainer. Not in it for the money, in it for my continuing knowledge - if I happen to take on clients and make money that would be nice, but that is not my objective.
Lastly. as I have dropped the weight, I have learned alot about my body. I learned the hard way last year I had a torn ACL in my left knee. I have mild arthritis in my righ shoulder, my left ankle, etc. I have learned to work through this. Most of the pain has gone away, accept for my left ankle (it's a bitch trying to do lunges/calf raises).
So for the over 30 crowd, it's not too late to start. May take several years if you wanna compete in a bodybuilding show, but like any other sport, it takes time.
I am done now!

I unfortunatley entered the "over" 35 group this past Saturday. As I was supping my Diet Coke at the bar, I got into thinking "I am too old for this". Thats a different story all together, not appropriate for a BB forum.
As I said, I know the muscles are developing, I can see it in my arms. And if I flex just right I can see my quads and calf's. I'd like to think I have a 6 pack buried away, only time will tell (in my MySpace, I comment how I am trying to get Oprah to pay for the $55,000 surgery).
I base my success at the gym, based on the DOMS 24 hrs later, although that has disappeared since I started taking creatine. Older people love to complain about their aches and pains, I look forward to them. In last months, or the month before. in Muscular Development there was a thing written by a forum member about why does he subject himself to the constant pain. I look forward to it at my old age, this means I am making gains. And boy, do I love that burn every once in awhile.
I am 3 dozen yrs old now, I am an old fart.

FresnoBeeDude,
That is an amazing story and I wish you all the best with it. In my personal experience, it is NEVER too late to start--or take it up again. When I was 33, I overdosed on asthma medication and had some kind of seizure. (Stupid; I didn't even get a chance to use the GOOD stuff!). My weight went from 200 pounds (I was overweight, of course, but reasonably muscular) to 159, had a pulse rate of 140 for almost a year. Should've killed me, but it didn't. The only reason I lived was because I wanted to, had a beautiful fiancee (now my wife of 12 years) and wanted my mother (now gone) to see her grandchildren someday. That all came true becuase I wanted it more than anything else.
After I got better (took almost a year for my pusle rate to drop) I started working out again. Took a while, but I got back on my feet. Got married; my wife and I have two beautiful children and I couldn't wish for anything more.
So, for you, I wish you all the good luck and strength that the future has to offer. Eat well, train hard, do your best, and you'll make out just fine.

Nah. Were just getting tired of youngsters constantly asking if they can still put on muscle mass as they hit 35+, 40+, 50+ ect.. Needs to be a sticky FAQ as me and a few others have pointed out on this thread. How many times do I have to tell people they only stop getting stronger when they stop lifting?
Jeff.

Bar stories are always an appropriate O/T subject here.
You never get to old to go out either.
Just gets a bit tougher. Another challenge to overcome.

From a recent N Y Times article 'Fit, not frail: exercise as a tonic for aging.'
[quote]Miriam E. Nelson, director of the John Hancock Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition at Tufts University in Boston and lead author of the new recommendations, observed last fall in The Journal on Active Aging that ?with every increasing decade of age, people become less and less active.?
?But,? Dr. Nelson said, ?the evidence shows that with every increasing decade, exercise becomes more important in terms of quality of life, independence and having a full life. So as of now, Americans are not on the right path.?[quote]
So, at 35 or whatever, it's not too late; it's too important.

I happen to like the 35 and over forums. Its a good place to come to and ask questions that older folks may know. Its a forum where lots of people have had body injuries that many younger people have not had.
You live and learn...Thats why this place is nice..

In defense of the ignorant, people who are just starting out have to start somewhere, and there's a LOT of bloody propoganda out there convincing men that they stop producing Testosterone when they turn 29. If we had half the amount of bad exercise, health, fitness, and nutrition out there in the world, we'd still have twice more than the good stuff.
Just listen to what SOME of the personal trainers in their size 42 pants are telling the soccer moms who are coming to them 'cause hubby don't like to look at her no more.

All the more reason for a sticky FAQ. The theme of this thread has appeared at least 5 times in the last couple of weeks. Not to mention similar questions.

Depending on the gullibility of the individual.....there are dozens of miracle pills out there that'll get you ripped in no time.i have a friend who was prescribed some weight loss pills by his physician and he DID lose weight!But...he was unable to work as the constant diarrhea kept him in the john on a regular basis.I think ill forego the miracle drugs and just stick with hard work and dedication.

I felt the need to bump this thread back up. Maybe it really SHOULD be a sticky. Just sayin'.
