I think it's just human nature to be separated. For example, at my pool, the black folk come out after the white folk have laid in the sun all day. I have no idea why, but they do. The white people cook on the grill and the black people do not even ask if they can use it or if we have room. They proceed to bring their own grill, pour 4 gallons of lighter fluid on it and cook on the other side of the pool deck. Why? Maybe they like the taste of lighter fluid. LOL!

Alas, but the deep south has great weather, by far the best college football in America, nice beaches, great golf courses, beautiful wilderness, and some of the prettiest women on earth. I'll take all those and be 100 years behind, that's fine with me.

And for the record, I see nothing wrong with dating black girls. If they will date you, by all means go have fun. I don't think I could do it on a serious level because I would not want the stares at family functions. No matter what, her family will look at you weird and yours will at her. I don't see how either side would ever see the other as equal. To me, that's a stress I don't want or need in my life. Just MHO there.
That should answer NotTooLate question on why america and americans are still separated :-)

You know at first I thought you were joking with a sort of bad taste but then I realized that you're being perfectly serious. To answer your question we do not have separate living areas. There is a section of town that is predominantly East Indian but East Indians also live everywhere else and again there is a very old area called Chinatown but the entire city is 40% Asian and that area is a tourist area for sightseers. The roots of that area go back to the inception of the railroad when this was a mining town and Asian workers came to build the railroad. That was over 100 years ago and there was hardly anyone living here. Yes I will correct you, we are completely integrated. I would say that I cannot imagine a place where there was segregation but unfortunately I have lived in the deep south and I know all too well how segregated it is. To an outsider your part of the world is archaic and a shameful display of racism and intolerance akin to the disgrace of South Africa. Unless someone has actually been to the deep south they would unlikely even comprehend that it could possibly be as archaic as it is as it seems unfathomable in todays world.

Human nature is to form communities based on needs. The form of segregation in the south is an imposed form of separation formed during slavery and continued to this day. You already know that unless you have been living in a closet your whole life.

I refuse to even comment on your pool and BBQ comment. I will say this. This is the reason that southerners should keep their mouths shut regarding racial issues unless they want to embarrass themselves in front of the world on an international website and make the south look as bad as it really is.

Regarding your last comment, your post again displays to the world just how backwards the deep south is and how ingrained segregation is in the minds of the people who live there.

For those who don't know, Whiskeyjack is referring to a drug infested area where daily life is watching crackheads wander the streets like bees in a hive buzzing for the next hit of crack. These crackheads are comprised of all races by the way

Hold up, NTL . Your remarks here ^ ironically, acknowledge one person's view of the world as speaking for an entire region . Yes, there are many with the same mentality as Tallgtlmn, but I can assure you that he doesn't speak for all, and that much has changed. I'm what they call a "Yankee transplant" , and have been here for 30yrs. Atlanta has transformed in an amazing way since the 70's, and I've been witness to it. In fact, because of the incredible growth in the greater ATL area, it's a 50/50 proposition to even find someone who is originally from here these days. And to me, this is a good thing....and a driving force in expelling old ways of thinking in this region. I strongly suspect that much of the same has happened in other major metro areas in states like NC, SC, TN, etc.. The more growth (lots of it because of large, underdeveloped southern states), the better for transformation and "melting" of cultures.

But to keep things in perspective....the year I moved to ATL (72')...it was back in Boston (where I came from) where school buses were lit on fire because of deeply rooted racial tension and hatred, not the south. Racism is a problem that is not unique to any one geographical area, worldwide. Just sayin'.......

I do agree that transplants have made a huge difference in the south, especially in places like Atlanta which is predominantly black, but I am speaking of the majority of the southern states including rural areas where transplants are few and old ways are highly ingrained. I also will acknowledge that there are a few born southerners that have risen above their cultural roots but these are few generally speaking. Even still, the south is a racial abomination, whereas in other areas progress has been seen at a much more progressive pace. I know, because I have lived there in fairly recent years and traveled throughout the entire US. I will also say that as someone who lives in an interracial family I have seen things that yourself, as a white person alone, may never encounter. It's easy to think that things are rosy when you're not the one that people are oppressing. Racism is a worldwide problem of various degrees depending on location but certainly not anywhere near the degree of the deep south.

being from the south doesnt make a person a racist anymore than being from the north makes someone an @sshole LOL, which btw is a commonly held belief in the south.

There are predominantly more racists in the south because of the roots of that region. The trouble, my dear friend, is that racists never know they are.

I was not going to reply to this thread because I didn't want to get involved but I feel the need to describe my experiences.

For what it's worth, I am an African-American female born in rural Mississippi. Growing up we had a confirmed member of the KKK and an interracial couple on my street. To my knowledge, there were no confrontations as the aforementioned folks stayed to themselves. We knew who the racists were and stayed away from them. I went to predominately white schools and universities. I had and have friends of all races and backgrounds because I was raised to see the good in people and not the physical shell. I know many of my black and white friends were taught the same things.

I live in a suburb of Atlanta and have neighbors of all colors, religions and ages. We all use the neighborhood facilities (pool/tennis courts/playground equipment) as a community. We all want the same things--safety, increased property values and a sense of belonging.

Sure I've had problems or obstacles because of my race. IMO, I'd have those issues anywhere in the US. I can live anywhere in the US but I choose to live in the South. This is my home and if I'm blessed to have children, I will raise them here.

The South has come a long way in race relations. More work needs to be done; however, I can say that about the entire country.

In all seriousness, that must be a nice environment, where everyone can live together without looking over your shoulder and not trusting the next guy.

That's fine. What I was trying to do with that example is to show that it's not a forced thing but something that happens for some reason. My point and question there was it necessary for the groups to be separated? Why was it necessary for one group to bring their own stuff? Do we always have to be separated like that?

I was just stating what I have observed. I could care less what color someone is as long as they have some semblance of intelligence. This is a whole different can of worms, it goes both ways.

I wasn't try to slam you, TG, but I'm not sure you realize how the earlier post read to a few of us. Fwiw, it's not your intelligence that came into question, but rather, the mentality behind the words...as innocent and sincere as I'm sure they were meant. Yeah, I guess you could say it is a slight, but not meant in a harsh way on my part.

Yes, you're correct! And trust me, I heard that BS for many years . It took me a long time to adjust to a slower paced world here, but I can assure you, I call Atlanta home and would never even consider moving back to Boston .

I realize now it probably read differently than intended. Words on a message board sometimes do that.

It seems my comment about dating may have started this. With regard to dating, I really couldn't care less what race, culture or nationality a woman is as long as she is intelligent, fun, tall, pretty, etc. BUT, if I ever got involved seriously with a woman of another race, country, or culture, I would fear that I would never be seen as equal from her side and she wouldn't from mine. I'm not sure that would be fair to her and I as it would be a stress on the relationship regardless of how we felt about each other. I've seen far too many married friends have bickering arguments over family and family members. That is all I was trying to say there.

I knew you had to have heard that for a long, long time. I figured you for more south of the city, i.e. Macon, Newnan, Columbus or somewhere between.

I didn't want to get into this thread initially, but the above quote is what got me going. I think churches being segregated along some lines are universal throughout the US. Correct me if I am wrong on that one.

^^ And do you know why you feel like that now? Probably because you're still in your 30's. Once you've got another decade under your belt you may well decide that the world can go to hell, and that the only thing that really matters is what you want out of life

I am sick of the hearing the racists crap. Everyone born these days has the exact same opportunities as everyone else. If the one's screaming racism would shut the hell up the problem would go away. But of course it would put people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton out of a job.

We can all get along. Black, White or any other race. We just need to stop worrying about what everyone else has and be content with what the good Lord has blessed us with.

Oh yea, about the comments about the South. I don't think we are 100 years behind because we have intergrated schools, water fountains and black people can ride in the front of the bus if they like.

What I am trying to say is that life is lived by the choices that you make and no one is holding anybody back regardless of race.

I realize that anyone in the south is not going to find my post very nice because they are going to feel that they need to defend the south which is their home. I understand that. However, I am not speaking as a southerner, I am speaking as an outsider who views the south from an outsider's perspective. When I lived in the south I lived in a black community for a while. Even saying that makes me cringe because we don't have separate communities here. One interesting observation while I was there is that everyone seemed to be satisfied with their lot in life regardless of how backwards or inconceivable it is to an outsider. There were many occasions when I would say to the family that I was living with, how can you stand this, and they would always say it's better than it used to be. Being better than it used to be seemed to be acceptable to them even though to someone from somewhere else it was atrocious. Where we lived there were separate neighborhoods, schools (busing is still in effect ), people worked at different jobs depending on race. There were jobs that I could get that my African American southern born counterparts could not get no matter how qualified they were (though there was an occasion that I lost my job because of being in an interracial family once they found out). I also encountered a lot of hatred that races on all sides did not encounter. There is a kind of traitor aspect that white southerners see in blended families. The common consensus was that if you're black you can't help it (<--their words) but if you're white and you mix you have betrayed the race. What I learned from this is that there is a quiet acceptance of the way things are but those who mix may influence others and lead the south away from the tolerable racial comfort zone that they have established for themselves. To me, as an outsider, using the same facilities is not enough when there are also blatant racial divides that seem to be so conveniently ignored for the sake of peace. It's the *state of mind* that needs to evolve.

Agree that racism is fear based. It's interesting to me that you pointed out that the election is causing these kinds of comments. Personally I've got as many X-pats as I can gather here in Vancouver voting democrat by absentee ballots in that election. The entire city here is rooting for Obama.

Who cares what other people think. Live your life and enjoy it. At least half the people I know are gay or lesbian or converting from male to female or the other way around lol It's damn interesting around here!

I appreciate your points and your experiences but not everyone is satisfied with the status quo or lot in life. I think being exposed to different views and opportunites are key. We still have to do more work around race relations. I think the first step is getting comfortable discussing these issues in a respectful manner.

I should have clarified my earlier point. I should have stated that in my neighborhood we come together as a community and race is a non-issue IMO. The kids play together and the adults socialize together. The neighborhood facilities help to facilitate this interaction. Yes, there are differences but we find a way to work through them. Atlanta is too busy to hate.

Wow bama, you should bone up on what's been achieved since the 60's.

Agree. Discussion and implementing action based on those discussions are key.

True, Atlanta is very busy! Atlanta seemed more progressive than many other areas in the south to me. In some of the smaller towns you would swear that nothing has evolved in the last hundred years Rural Georgia was very uncomfortable for me but rural southern Alabama was terrifying lol

I can certainly understand that one, NTL. I can see where southern Alabama would be one of the places you'd describe as not moving far in progression. I can also understand that about rural Georgia. For me, Clinch County and Echols County come to mind. When I was doing upgrades on the election machines in Georgia, my crew did not go to those counties because we had black folks on the team. It was rumored that the people in the county seat did not want us to come there. This was maybe 6 years ago.

I agree with you on that. I have other feelings along these lines, but I can't get them to read how I want them to sound.

One thing I should say that I've noticed is the people our age and older interact and hang out without issue. It appears that the younger set is the group that is always apart and appears distrustful of everyone else. But hasn't that always been the case throughout history? I'm sure the adults of the 60's never thought the hippies would ever amount to anything productive.

So you have personal experience with the roots of the south, or with every person in the south?

I wanted to put my two cents in. I live in Gilbert Arizona, just outside of Phoenix. On my street there are white, black and hispanic. I lived back east where race is more of an issue. Here it is an issue but less so. There are areas that are predominantly one thing or another. Rich, poor, back, white, hispanic, whatever. I think the older you are the more of an issue there is. My sons best friend is black. He calls me dad. I love that kid. Great kid. Kids today are easier going about race. They joke about it with each other and take it less seriously. The problem in some respects is thier older family members that hold on to old ideas. My sons friend has an uncle that asked him why he spends so much time hanging out with those white folks. Not that he hates white people but he is stuck in the past. Segregating himself. It will take too many years to develope racial utopia. Dont hate and dont stress, set a good example and others will follow.

Strength is in our combined differences.

I dont think America is a divided nation, but a work in progress. I cant speak about the rest of the world.

I don't need stats, I have personal experience.

I know your post was innocent and that you probably didn't even realize how it sounded to others. I am not picking on you, just pointing something out.

Yes I was going to say that azzholes would come under the same category lol

Agree that racism is fear based. It's interesting to me that you pointed out that the election is causing these kinds of comments. Personally I've got as many X-pats as I can gather here in Vancouver voting democrat by absentee ballots in that election. The entire city here is rooting for Obama.

Oh gee, that is big of you. Now start working on your MIND.

Who cares what other people think. Live your life and enjoy it. At least half the people I know are gay or lesbian or converting from male to female or the other way around lol It's damn interesting around here!
If you read the follow-up post. I sincerely and truly apologize for this statement. I am far from a racists and really do like all people North or South.
Everyone please accept my apology and forgive me. I know that racism exist throughout the world and not just regional. You are absolutely correct about changing the mind. What I have to do is think before I speak(write).
