There used for 2 different reasons. Casein is a slow absorbed/digested protein so you would use it when you need to have protein over a longer period of time, whey is the fastest absorbed protein, so its ideal in the morning when you wake up and right after a workout. Casein you would take before bed to prevent muscle breaking down at night.
