Advice on moving to Australia(serious)
Hey, so I've been seriously considering a move to Australia. I don't really like the way things are going here in the States and I think Australia would be a nice change.
I have a few questions:
1. What would I need to do in order to attain Australian citizenship?
2. How much does it generally cost to get there?
3. Are things generally higher priced in Australia due to having to import them, or are a lot of the basic goods produced locally?
4. I'm going to college for Nursing - is there as great a demand for Nurses in Australia as there is in the States(I assume so)? Also, would I be required to take any exams for Nursing once I get over there and try to get a job?
I may have some more questions as I think of them...Thanks for any responses guys(and girls).

1. Pass the citizenship test (I've heard that it's relatively easy): http://www.citizenship.gov.au/test/index.htm
2. Don't know.
3. Alot of the goods are produced locally, yes. However, we are experiencing increasing food prices atm (as well as increasing fuel prices).
4. Can't really comment on this...although I have heard that you need to have work experience (in nursing) before you can become a registered nurse.

you don't need to pass the citizenship to move here, you need to satisfy certain visa requirements depending on your reason for moving, citizenship comes later

I would look into some sort of working holiday first before you come mate. It would give you a chance to work, make nursing contacts, scope out employment and see australia before you make up your mind.
It is possible to secure a longer term visa though employment, so thats something to look in too.

I was thinking somewhere in New South Wales... Like Melbourne, or Sydney... I know this is an opinion question, but where would be the best area to reside?
I'm lookin for a semi-urban area... Not too large of a city, but maybe one close to the bigger cities.
Suggestions?

Melbourne is in Victoria, a different state to NSW, where Sydney is.
And as long as you don't move to the proper country or intermediate coastal areas. You'll be close enough to a "big city"... the cities aren't too big comparatively in Australia, Sydney is the largest with about 4 mil, and rising quickly. But with the housing market that will dip slowly for a while before it all picks back up again.

Same here man. Australia just has that... "appeal" that draws me to it. Idk exactly, but I feel it's just a huge change from where I'm at, and that's something that I need.

Apply for permanent residency status (PR) first. You are only eligible for citizenship after 2 years of permanent residency.

I don't think financial jobs in Australia are as good as in the US. You'd be better off staying in the US, or moving to another country like the UK where the financial sector is much bigger. If you were going to move here, Sydney is probably the best city for finance jobs.

yes, plenty of jobs for nurses, although hours are generally long and the pay is average. fyi, you realise nursing is a female job?

We are screaming out for nursing graduates! Look into getting a student visa for study, which i think is three or four years. It will be easier than trying to get citizenship straight up. Your GPA will determine your chances of getting into university, although international students pay hefty prices to study here. Also depends on where you want to go..Sydney is far more expensive to live and get around than melbourne, and brisbane is perhaps the cheapest (personal experience while studying med).
Check out gu.edu.au for one queensland university that offers a reputable nursing degree, and has plenty of international placements available.
I hope this helps
