Sadly one of my best friends is a "that guy"
Not in the way he lifts, he has great form, and can lift a hell of lot more than me despite being so much smaller.
But he gets a huge ego trip when we're lifting. He'll see someone who obviously hasn't been lifting long and talks alot of trash to me "look that that weakling, I bet you anything I can out lift that fool"
or he'll check out the hot girls that are working out and turns to me and says (full volume) "I WOULD **** THE **** OUT OF THAT GIRL", when shes like 3 feet away and can hear him.
I'm there to improve myself, its pointless focusing on everyone else.
Here's another "that guy" story...or rather "those guys"
At the closest branch of the gym I've got a membership at, the whole gym is pretty much one open room with treadmills and those weight machines all sharing the same large space. The free weights however, are kept in a small separate partitioned-off room with only one entrance.
The roid freaks basically rule this room with an iron fist. The sec you come through the door weight its like blood in the water. They all stop standing around talking and start eying you up and down. Then they conveniently say they're using the station you want to use even though they're not lifting at all. Plus they mock you if you don't lift as much as they do, though since you never see them lifting its hard to establish the truth of that.
This is why I go to the branch on the other side of town.

Got a guy who dead set looks like the WWE's Undertaker, big and strong but one of the angriest people i've seen in a gym. He takes over about 5 machines at once and if someone happens to walk near one of his machines he proceeds to absue them. Also he takes all the little attachements for the machines and wraps them up in his towel, hiding them for his own personal use or maybe he's just stealing them!!!!

lol wtf, you should get one of those fake WWE championship belts and give it to him, tell him you'll trade the title for some machine attachments.

i know some guys who not only bicep curl and shrug at the squat rack. They do so with lighter weights. We have set barbells that go up to 110, and they barbell curl 95 pounds(which is still too heavy for them). They also do this despite having 6 benches (3 flat, 2 incline, and 1 decline) when no one is using them (decline normally free and one incline probably will be too). I remember one day i was trying to squat and one of those guys was like i am still curling, i was like dude i want to actually use the squat rack for what it's for; squatting.

We have one guy that seems to think he is going to gain muscle by just talking to any of the serious lifters.
I have seen him maybe do a total of 30 minutes of lifting since I started at the gym in January. He loves to talk trash to other people about them talking between sets but he just sits there and talks all day and never works out.

"that guy" (there seems to be a new one every week) comes up to me in between sets and asks me some dumb question, "hey do you ________?" fight ufc, play football, wrestle, etc. i say "no, i never play any sports." but despite hearing how uninterested i am in sports, he proceeds to talk about sports for the next 10 minutes. i have no clue what hes talking about and i couldnt give a ****.

Precisely.
Another wimminz story:
There are two very attractive girls that work out, but they are twins. I usually work out by myself, but if I have somebody w/me, he wouldn't make a very good wingman, he's mid 30's and kind of chubby.
How the hell does one dude approach hot twins??? I've got nothing.

it does?! the only hot girls at my gym are there with trainers or have just as good of form as I do - ORRR they're 16 which would land me a hefty jail sentence.
I hate when I'm goin to take a leak before I leave and there's some naked old 50 yr old guy that just got out of the shower starin me down. It's pretty goddamn awkward.
OH - and to whoever posted about the roid freaks occupying the free weight room -- do you workout at ballys? cause I used to go there and that's the exact same scenario. Pretty sad.

I've only seen this dude once. But he was some skinny ass dude acting like he was all that. Putting 400 on the leg press going 1/8th of the way down. Commenting on some elderly guy DB pressing 40lb DB's. "You gotta start somewhere, eh. I do 50's and 60's...its a lotta weight."
Ahh so annoying.

The dude that asks you how many more sets you have. And then as you say like 2, he will then just stand over you. And watch you until you finish.
Or the occasional mirror muscle flexer.
The guy that puts too much weight on the bench press bar that he cant do, sit there, sit there some more. Maybe go get a drink. Pretend he did it, as he keeps sitting there. And then just leaves.

I'll do that. I mean I won't just eyeball the guy; I'll tell them not to rush. But I'll stand by the area, and occasionally glance over. I do that, so no one else tries to go in there and take the power rack before me.

how about how the young dude comes in wearing jeans and a dress shirt and lifts in it
how about the dude who puts 6 plates on the bar to squat and will go down about a foot for maybe 2 reps
how about the little ****s who stand in the middle of the free weight area and just talk and dont move
how about the guy who comes to the gym to hit on the ladies instead of working out
how about the guy who is doing barbell curls with way too much weight that he is jerking his body back and forth

His form was all wrong, he was using a heavy weight and swinging the barbel, moving his elbows. Basically, he was using momentum to swing the weight up. He was basically showing if that he can lift heavy weights, when he really could not with that form.
So, i offered to give him some advice, as i usually do in the gym. I just told him to keep his elbows completely still and use the actual bicep pull up the weight, and not to bend his back and use his body to swing.
I even showed him how it's done, and it's a simple barbel curl exercise, nothing more.
He still moved his elbow and didn't get it right.
So i told him, if it helps, push you're elbows into you're body and lift the weight (that's how i started out to get the right form first before moving the weights up).
He still did not get it, and them threw the weight on the ground and told me that the gym trainer told him to do it like that (he is a pro body builder, very well respected and i know his techniques, he did NOT show him that).
He then started yelling at me, made everyone look and made me look really bad. So i simply told him: "Listen, i gave you advice, you add whatever amount of salt you want and go by it, you don't have to listen to me, but im trying to help, you need to get the form of any exercise right before you move the weights up, don't be embarrassed with light weights, throw you're ego out the door".
He then replied:
"Hey, i have been working out in this gym for 4 months, i think i know what i am doing here."
I just told him :
"Good for you, i hope you achieve his goals."
He started mumbling some bad words in a loud and angry tone, i just ignored him. I just say bye to everyone in the gym and left. But man, did i feel like giving him a big smack in the face with that barbel for making me look like an idiot.
Some people, their ego's are so big, they thing that they know everything, when they have been working out for 4 months and not gained muscle at all....you think they would wonder.

I understand what you're saying, but did he ask for your help? If no, then he has every right to be a dick to you. That's nice of you, but maybe he does not want to be bothered.

Do not say that....Girls usually get ticked when guys try to correct them (unless they are going to hurt themselves with bad form or something).

First of all I dont see why it would annoy anyone that someone wears thier weightlifting belt for everything, I dont but if they do thats cool there is probably a reason.
Grunting people/hissing people-It may be annoying but starting lifting some serious weight and you might find out you grunt involuntarily. It isnt like we are in a library of church its a freaking gym.
IPODs- People like to listen to music while working out nowadays, Im sorry if Im ignoring you while I try to workout without having you bug the **** out of me. I will not make direct eye contact with you either it will only make you motion at me while you know Im listening to music and I wont want to be rude to you and Ill take off my earphones and pretend like you are not bothering me because then I will be "that guy" to you.
The guy doing curls at the squat rack because it is the only straight bar in the gym other than the one bench. But sorry we didnt call you to schedule using the squat bar 5 minutes before you walked into the gym.
The guy with the raised eyebrow staring very cocky at you when you happened to involuntarily grunt for 3 reps of your 15 when you were using a weight on an exercise that happened to be more difficult than you expected because you are not trying to stay at the same weight forever. Get over yourself ******* and by the way I hope your feet dont sweat too much while you are doing your squats in your flip flops.
That guy using the machine I wanted to use for an exercise more appropriate than him using it to perfect his golf swing. But I sigh to myself and move on, he paid the same price I did for a membership and he is using the equipment because he has that right. Im just glad I am educated enough to be able to do another exercise that targets the same muscle.
The gym partners that scream at each other. Im just glad I use my ipod and cant hear what they are saying. It must be good to have a partner to push you to your limits.
That guy who thinks that they are the ultimate fighter ninja with the UFC gloves on, doing a quick set of bench and then attempts to grapple the punching bag that sits near the free weight section and then starts pounding the speed bag. Good speed, but I can still hear the bag chattering over my ipod, why doesnt this douchebag ask the gym attendants if they can move the "Rocky" area to another place, wait I almost became that guy. I wait for the Iceman to leave and then I quitley ask the gym attendents if they can move the bag complex to a more desireable area because it is disturbing and I almost **** myself and dropped the dumbell on my nuts when I heard the guys from Drumline come walking thru the gym.
The old guy that sits on the leg press machine for 20 mins and doesnt get up. I approach him and ask politely "sir Im police officer and Im just trying to get my workout in before I have to work another 12 to 14 hours and have to be in here tommorrow at the same time" the man then gets up from the leg press machine and lets me finish my workout. Im so glad that old ****er didnt say "sorry first come first serve buddy" because I sure would have jumped on the machine that he was going to use next and set it on the lightest weight and pumped out 100 to 150 of the loudest grunting reps anyone would have ever heard, maybe that would make the old **** choose his words wisely the next time.

"that Guy"
This is the reason why I stop going to the gym. I can work on my form and workout without any one get in the way. Plus I do not become "That Guy"
