biking!!!!!
As posted in my journal I got a new bike yesterday!
I'm pretty excited about it. I went biking last night roughly 20 kms. Give or take and felt amazing!
Its an 18 speed. I'm new so I started at gear 12. Its awesome.
The first night I went out I just leisurely biked for around an hour and felt amazing!
I've been lacking in the cardio department at the gym and this seems to be my cure. For now.
Also my roommate got one. She really wants to loose weight as she is getting married.
Anyone know just how good biking is?

AWESOME :d
i actually just learned how to ride a bike in the past two weeks. i got a 7spd in jan or feb because it was my new years resolution to finally learn how, and start biking to work (for my body, the environment, my wallet). i'm not biking to work yet because i need some practice steering and i'm scared of traffic but it's SUCH an amazing feeling!
i went to my folks for mothers day, and they live in the burbs. i biked really fast down a hill and it was so sunny and quiet and wonderful this is big news for me, it took 19 years but i finally did it, i rode a bike :P

I ride my bike to the gym and back this time of year, its a 20min each way, when I get to the gym im pumped and ready to go and I get in 40min of cardio in. Its alot more fun than doing cardio in the gym.

Biking is excellent, full stop. You have your full spectrum of uses as well, there is distance riding (equivalent to steady state cardio), or you can mix in aerobic or anerabic intervals as well. You can mix in progression work too, if you really want (i.e. 5 minutes at gear 12, and then the next time do either 6 minutes or use gear 13).
Plus, you're outside, which is a whole lot cooler than sitting on a bike and staying in one place.

Congrats on the new bike, I almost brought my mountain bike to work with me today but they were calling for rain. Wish I could ride to work on it but it's about 20 miles each way, downhill to work and uphill to home!
I used to mountain bike everyday for my lunch hour, we have some awesome singletrack mtb trails about a 10 minute ride from the office. Had to give it up due to snow.
The great thing about bicycling, besides being outside of course, is that you can vary your workout like nervesgone said.
So is it a street bicycle or a mountain bike, v4nty?

Awesome! I'm a chronic klutz on a bike, but I'd love to be able to do it myself.

I love biking! Ever since I lost my license, that's how I've been getting everywhere! I want one of those cool pimped out, old-fashion bikes.. you know, the ones with the big white wheels and a basket in the front, haha. I think they're so cute!

I commute to work by bicycle every day, about 90kms a week.
It's fabulous for building up your quads. Mine are very strong now, and I've only been riding for 3 months!
Cycling is incredibly good for you!
A few points which might help:
- please don't make the mistake of adding too much resistance to aid your workout - it's a surefire way to wreck your knees. It's much safer to be on less resistance & pedal faster than the other way round.
- stretch after riding (I didn't do this for a while and you end up feeling uncomfortably tight in your quads while walking)
- and make sure you eat some carbs before a long ride
Have fun!

I bought an 18 speed mountain bike. I love it.
I may start biking to the gym. Its about 15 kms each way. Would take maybe 25 minutes I think?? I'm not positive.
My concern is that the way home is uphill. I'm worried I won't make it.
Wait. Scratch that. I can make it. Lol.
Does anyone know a calorie per hour for biking. At say 30 kms an hour??
