shoulder issues
can anyone tell me what you think is wrong with my shoulder? a couple of months ago i hurt it doing DB military press and every since then ive layed off doing shoulders, but the past couple of weeks the pain has subsided. i can do heavy bench(barbell or dumb bell) with no pain AT ALL and decline with no pain, but whenever i attempt to do flyes or incline(light weight) i still feel a little pain in my shoulder. i still dont do military press, but i can do arnold presses with no problem. any idea?

Haven't you been to the doctors?
I have had shoulder problems the last year and I have just recently started to make a good recovery, I had a problem with the bicep tendon in my right and an unknown problem in my left (never went for an MRI or CT so no diagnosis by human eye). It could be something you may never expected just like me, get it checked out. You have left it long enough.

I just had to have surgery to remove a bone spur on the underside of my acromion. The spur was digging into my supraspinatus tendon and cause some serious pain whenever I tried to do inclines, upright rows, and some shoulder exercises.
Without an M.D. after my name, I'd say you probably have a tendon issue somewhere inside the shoulder, and the sooner you get it figured out, the better. Some things can be fixed with proper exercises, while others, like mine, require surgery. BUUUUUUUT, if you let it go too long, it may be surgery either way.

Shoulder Scoped
I had the same problem that SirStanLee mentioned, an impingement of the acrimion bone upon the supraspinatus (right shoulder). I had the arthroscope done under the table while I was still with the Army Reserves, and the procedure was fast and well done. Within 8 days (I know a bad idea) I was beating my face during PT, but everything was OK. All in all I took about 7-8 months of quality rehabilitation, and up until yesterday I haven't had a problem since (had the surgery in june of 2003). Doing lateral raises with dumbells I seemed to have brought to my attention that 20lbs. was a little too much for that set on the right shoulder (left shoulder was fine). So hopefully it didn't bite me too hard and I can resume my normal weight routine within a few days, and take it real carefully with the right shoulder.

7-8 months of recovery? I had the same surgery for my ac-joint. They took out 5 mm at the end of my collarbone. I am currently 8 weeks post op. I was doing some reading and heard from others who had the procedure done that you could be back to lifting with this injury 5-6 months.
Can you please give more details as to your recovery? thanks

I just had shoulder surgery in March. I had a labial tear and a bone spur. All shoulder presses before were impossible as were lateral raises in any direction. The surgery lasted about an hour and I was moving my shoulder that night. Last week I did my old chest workout as well as my old shoulder workout. My shoulder is stronger and I have no pain. I can't really remember any real pain after surgery.
Go see an ortho, they have that procedure down.

I guess everyone's recovery is different, but I most definitely wasn't moving my shoulder anytime soon after that, between the pain and the cement like sticking bandage they put on. But... my rehab consisted of electrical stimulation as well as light free weights and cable/resistance training. I went twice a week for an hour or so if I remember correctly (it was a few years ago). And I was feeling pretty OK by the end, insurance kept paying and the PT was hot :drool All in all I guess I could have been lifting before that, but back then I never used any weights anyway. Push ups were it. I guess there are a fair amount of factors involved with rehabbing, and there weren't any complications I was aware of or anything else I can recall.

I have a few post-op photos. The bruising was really bad. I guess I should mention that by "moving" my shoulder I mean just a few inches at first but after a week I was driving, cables, ect.

I had to give up the dumbbells entirely in favor of cables and resistance bands for shoulder work. I was very resistant at first, but there was NO pain and at the very least my delts didn't go to pot. It's been about 3 months and I'm still using bands. By the way, I could do Arnie's with no problems, too.

I'm still recovering. It has only been 5 months, and I still have some residual pain that just doesn't seem to want to go away. I also have an odd occurrence--the outside of my shoulder blade has been hurting as of late, as if the bone itself is bruised. It only hurts to the touch, not to movement of my shoulder.
I also still have a "catch" in my shoulder when lifting my arm up, then over behind my neck. I attribute it still to tight tendons and a flexibility issue, but if it persists, I'll be callin' the ol' surgeon up to ascertain whether or not this is normal.
My recovery will take a bit longer due to the fact that I was actually cut open and my deltoid was detached in order to fix the problem. Both the surgeon's PA and my PT say that it can take up to a year before I'm fully back to normal...but then again, I've never really actually been considered normal. My mom always says I'm "special."
