They're good for right before you workout. And from my experience, I don't feel a sugar rush from them like I would if I ate a Snickers Bar.

Ran out of my Almonds, and Raisins that I usually throw into a bag, and snack on throughout the day in school...so today I had my first protein bar in a longgg longg time. (maybe about 2 months or so). I had a Labrada Rock n Roll Bar, Cookie Twist Flavor. I must say, I was very impressed. It was delicious!..the macros are great..but a little high in sat.fat, and as for ingredients, i dislike the fractionated oils. It was a nice little treat, I still like their Cookie Bars better though, those things in the microwave are like an Oven Baked Apple Pie.

Re: best overall protein bars
Honey Stinger bars are by far the best protein bars I have ever tried! They have 20 grams of whey protein and honey not sugar. They have 100% of B-vitamins. The peanut butter pro flavor is awesome! By far my favorite!

Any way to buy single bars?
Damn, I'd like to try these bars but do not want to spend $25 on a box of 12!
Anyone know of a store selling a variety pack of the most popular bars? I'm particularly interested in Sustain and VPX, but also curious about some of the other ones that I have seen mentioned like Supreme.
I'd also settle for free samples of course
PS - I've read through 64 pages of these reviews. I will post my review of the protein bars I have eaten, as soon as I finish the 4 or 5 ones I just bought but haven't tried.

stores like gnc and vitamin shoppe sell individual vpx bars, there is only 2 flavors so u could pick up one of each to try before u buy a box...i think sustain is only available online so u would have to buy a box, but the reviews on sustain are mostly positive, so if u like protein bars, u will prob like them.

Whole Grain Protein Bars
Trioplex caramel apple and banana walnut are some of the best bars i've ever had. They are loaded with 30g protein and 400 calories to keep my body in protein synthesis when i dont have access to a well balanced meal. I dont like to eat a lot of bars because in my opinion they are just as processed as a candy bar, but then again id rather eat in-n-out before id skip a meal. I know they arent the best tasting bars compared to Pure Protein or Oh Yeah, but they are whole grain and much more natural than some of the others out on the market.

Detour Bars
IMO detour bars are great, they taste awesome, have an ok ammount of protein, and are filling so you can use it as a meal replacement.

I love Trioplex bars, though the regular ones are a little too calorie dense for me. I really like the Crunch and Duo variations; they are a little bit smaller, but have less calories. I think they pack a little more flavor as well.

My review of many bars
I've tried many bars - here are my thoughts on them.
Best tasting bar:
Oh Yeah - Peanut Butter and Caramel - awesome taste. Reminded me of a Baby Ruth with the whole peanuts. I was blown away! Nutrition seems decent - Looks like most of 19g of fat and 8g of saturated come from the peanuts.
Best bang/buck bar:
Pure Protein - Blueberry Crumb Cake, Cholocate Peanut Butter, Chocolate Deluxe. Average tasting, low cost and low sugar, good protein/calorie ratio (high sugar alcohol though).
The rest:
Myoplex Lite - Chocolate PB Crisp. Above average taste. Decent nutrition.
Lean Body Gold - About the same taste as the Pure Protein but more fat and calories.
Met Rx Protein Plus - Chocolate Roasted Peanut w/ Caramel, Chocolate Chunk. Same taste as Pure Protein - nothing special.
Muscle Milk Light - Chocolate Peanut Caramel - harder and worse tasting than Pure Protein.
Labarada Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip - Overrated. I was expecting something amazing. It's a mediocre tasting cookie with protein added. Poor nutrionals as well.
Promax - Cookies and Cream, Nutty Butter Crisp, Chocolate Mint, Double Fudge Brownie. Poor nutrition (corn syrup and soy protein), but Cookies in Cream is really delicious - almost as good as the Oh Yeah in a different way.
Cliff Builder Bars - Above average taste, but it's nearly all soy protein
Myoplex - The whey center is hard as a rock and taste is on par with the Pure Protein. Lower score for higher cost and toughness.
EAS Advantedge Carb Control Cookies and Cream - Med/Poor taste, and only 17g of protein (some soy) for 230 calories and 16 g of sugar alcohols.
I would really like to try the Sustain bars and the VPX bars. I wish there was a way to order just one bar for a sample instead of committing to a $25 box. Sounds like Detour bars are good as well. I am going to make it a point to try these bars if I can make it over to a Vitamin Shoppe. I haven't seen them in GNC.
Until I do try them, I am going to be an Oh Yeah man! OH YEAH!!!

MHP Probolic-SR
I havent seen anyone mention the Probolic-SR bars. Aside from a small amount of HFCS, it seems like a great bar. The triple peanut butter tastes good and has a decent texture, but also has some great protein and AA.
http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/mhp/probar.html
(make sure to change the dropdown to the Triple Peanut Butter, as the ingredients are radically different for each flavor)
Am I missing something, or are these just flying under the radar?
Edit: Added link to an ingredient listing.

Update: I tried the VPX Pumpkin Supreme and it's very tasty as well. It doesn't have the delicious carmel/peanut coating of the Oh Yeah, but the Oh Yeah has a fairly bland center. This bar has no coating but good texture and taste. It's very dry though; I must have guzzled 3-4 cups of water with it. I've read on these boards that microwaving the VPX makes them taste incredible, so will have to give that a try next time (microwaving seems to moisten up everything).
VPX has more calories than the Oh Yeah, but supposedly it's more natural and has 3g more protein. I have some Detour bars and a VPX Chocolate that I will try next. As a pumpkin lover, I will definetly be rotating the VPX Pumpkin on my protein bar intake.
Update 2: I just tried the low sugar Detour Caramel Peanut bar and it's pretty good. Not as tasty as the Oh Yeah or the VPX, but it's moister and tastier than the average bar. Nutrition is decent too - only 5g of sugar, and most of the fat seems to come from the peanuts. At 340 calories, that's 100 less than VPX.

detours all the way
i havn't had too many bars... met-rx, clif, powerbar, and detours, but I just bought the detours and they taste just like the description... like a freakin candy bar. Plus, although I don't believe they're listed on the site (i could be wrong), they sent me some lowered sugar ones, with 50% less, taking it down to only 3g each. They're too small for meal replacements, but either they can be a snack or you can take 2 as one of the day's smaller meals. caramel peanut is my favorite and it has some kind of fake chocolate that tastes just like the real thing.

Just finally tried the Muscle Milk Light version and it actually tastes better than the normal bars. I ate both Choc Peanut versions. The light version is much more like a real candy bar vs a protein bar and has 15 grams of protein and they are tiny little bars. A Great snack. The normal bars are huge with only 25 grams which is hard to believe considering they are so much larger than the light version.
I think I'll stick to the light version simply on size and taste. I could use the calories but the light version in that flavor is just so much better. It's actually hard to believe.

I used to buy EAS Myoplex Carb Sense here in greece, since they contain 31 grams of protein,33 grams of carbs and only 1,5 grams of sugar but they tasted really bad (not to mention here in greece supplements cost 4 times more, each bar costed 4 euros=6,5$!!!).since i decided to buy supplements only from bodybuilding.com i used some bars but the best so far with the highest amound of protein, the lowest amound of sugar so far that i enjoyed tastinng were VPX Zero Impact Carbs and ISS Research Pro42.my training partner says MHP's bars are also good so i guess i'll give it a try

Everyone might laugh but I'll always have a foddness for cookies&cream powerbars. They taste good but more importantly helped me kick start proper nutrition. They really got me over eating crap to eating (mostly)clean. Now I've lost 30lbs and am still going! Not saying it was all the bar but it helped.

Peak Body MegaPro 50 bars.
Crap name, but decent enough taste.
50g protein, 9.6g Carbs (8g sugars), 6.5g fat (5g sat).
Because of their high protein content, I've taken to eating half as a morning snack and the other half to suppliment my lunch (if I can't get enough protein with whole foods that day). Works well, quick to eat and saves some dough too!
Only downside is that the ingrdients says it contains Aspartame rather than Sucralose, which kind of explains the low sugar count. Can't always have everything...

Are there actually any BEST protein bars out there? From well known BB Pro I quote ' don't eat protein bars at all they all taste like frozen dog turd to me'! Nutritionally as well additives, preservatives - they just aren't very healthy. Besides the Protein in them is usually not the best quality.

I tried a Detour bar and was not impressed. I have tried probably 15 different kinds, and VPX is the best.

Sustain bars = overrated
WOW - what a disappointment! I just tried my first sustain bar and they taste slightly below average in my opinion. I want my money back! They also have sugar as an ingredient, which I am a little pissed about because I just started the Labrada Lean Body Promise diet and exercise regimen. Guess I should have read the ingredients more carefully before buying
However, I did buy 4 boxes of VPX bars, which I will be eating pretty much exclusively going forward. Pumpkin is slightly better than Chocolate
