muscle soreness
Is there anything I can do to relieve muscle soreness the day after a workout? I've noticed every time I try to increase the weight I'm lifting, I am so sore the next day I don't feel like doing anything. Is there a supplement or diet change I can do to decrease the pain so I can advance?

Cardio and stretching are supposed to help with soreness.

Glutamine, Arnica, and Sportenine. These supplements will help relieve muscle soreness.
Take glutamine daily, sportenine during and/or after workout, and Arnica if u pull a muscle.

For me, Xtend has made a big difference. Don't know if it's mind games or it is something that works for everyone or simply my lack of BCAA's, but I've noticed a definite difference when using it with my wo's and long distance runs!

And who r u might I ask?!
And she is not talking about that muscle baby!!!
Sportenine is an effective homeopathic companion before or after a workout as the pleasant tasting wafers assists over-stressed muscles and breaks down lactic acid-build-up.

It sickens me when people come up on this thread and think they know something bcuz they look half decent in a swimsuit.

Okay then....back to the topic at hand haha...
Here's the rundown of the shpiel I usually give about DOMS:
No one knows exactly what causes it
It's almost certainly not caused by lactic acid
It's probably caused by tissue damage/increase osmotic pressure in the cells/electrolyte imbalance
Stretching has been shown to reduce DOMS
Try a drink containing electrolytes post WO
If it really hurts, take an anti-inflammatory

I generally do not post on these forums but I am curious, how does that guy get banned when clearly he was reply'n to an insult at him; she called him jackass?!
Or can us women insult guys on a female forum and not be banned, but guys can not defend themselves?

If you go back to the start of the thread I politely disagreed that glutamine and the other supps he recommended have not proven to work. THEN I was insulted. There was no need for it.
He is a troll who is on all the bb/fitness websites apparently ...

I am not going to get in an argument with you on what you think is the correct solution for muscle soreness but what he suggested is correct. L-glutamine helps with muscle recovery preventing or cutting down on soreness. and arnica is used to heal bruises and treat pain and inflammation. I have used both products for years.
I am sure you are knowledgeable about a lot on fitness and supplements but what he said was correct.

And BACK to our regularly scheduled programming!!!!
Cap, question: How many forced sets are you doing? Are you working muscles in the same area? (i.e. chest then delts, back then chest?) I found that I did too many work sets & the soreness discouraged my next work out. So here's what I do... 6 days a week, one body part twice a week. Nothing too long (anything over an hour your hormones have dipped too low) & go heavy on the last 2 sets (total of 4 sets... 1 warm up, 1 "prep" set, 1 set that taxes your muscles, 1 set that really shocks your muscle) . I find that the 2nd work out & stretching during the week loosens me up. I used to have it were I would work out one day, be sore the entire week & when I could finally move freely, I was punishing that muscle again. Remember, you lift to stimulate not annihilate the muscle. As far as supps go, BCAA's are supposed to help. I eat like a horse so, I'll contribute my diet to my recovery and SLEEP! Man, I LOVE sleep. LOL.
*Disclaimer: I don't claim to have all the answers & don't want to. This is what I DO. This is MY OPINION. IT IS NOT THE GOSPEL NOR SET IN STONE. I have 5 years experience @ SELLING supplements & READING about them (and "guinea pigged" a lot of them). I've been working out for about 16 years & I'm still learning! I am studying for my N.A.S.M. certification. Once again, this is my OPINION!*
Thanks & good morning, good afternoon, good evening & good night... Lift, laugh, live & learn....

I was having the same problem a few days ago after starting a new ab routine. It was suggested that I try Scivation Xtend. I bought some yesterday and drink it during cardio. After I did my cardio I forced myself through my ab workout (which I could barely make it through since I was still kinda sore). This morning I woke up and BAM! no soreness whatsoever! I know it was the Xtend that helped...so with that said, I would recommend Scivation Xtend. Lots of folks on bb.com take it and I see why. I think it has L-Glutamine and some other aminos in it...but whatever, IT WORKS! Hope this helps a bit.

Emma for the record. This guy has zero respect for women and yet he hangs in the female section. He loves calling us the "B" word. I have an email from him calling me the "B" word and a comment along with a neg that includes him calling me the "B word" twice.
If you would like me to screen shot this and email it to you let me know. This guy needs some manners along with some MAJOR counseling.

Honey, if you can't tell the different between the word "jackass" vs "B1tch" then no one can explain it to you.
And for the record calling him a jackass was insult to all jackasses. When she called him a jackass she was being too nice in my opinion.

that is great you have found what works for you. Jury is still out on whether it is PROVEN to help with muscle recovery:
1. Some recent studies have shown that orally ingested glutamine is not absorbed well through the gut. Some studies claim as little as 2% of orally ingested glutamine is absorbed. If true this makes taking glutamine supplements next to useless.
2. Glutamine is a non-essential amino acid. This means your body does not need to consume glutamine, it can produce it on it's own. Because the body does not require consumption of non-essential amino acids, the digestive track will tend to just break them into their component parts, and then synthesize whatever it needs out of the components. Even if you didn't ingest any glutamine whatsoever, as long as you ate enough protein in general your body would not even notice, it'd just produce the glutamine it needed for itself.
So essentially he is NOT correct. He as well as you AND I have an opinion.
That is all

Question...
Is it the supplements we need to focus on or the rep range, forced sets, diet and recovery time allowed? Supplements are great & all but let's not forget that they are... well... supplemental to other more important factors. I personally do two "working" sets forcing out one or two forced reps (after two warm up sets). I stretch thru out the week and hit the same body part 48 hours later from a different angle or different exercise. Don't put all your faith in supplements, as you can see, the debate rages on about what works and what doesn't. I, personally, think stretching, reworking the area, diet and recovery are the key. I think you should look @ your workout, diet & recovery times first before shelling out bucks on a supplement. All the supps in the world can't replace proper training, diet, recuperation & mindset. There are many roads to one place, it just depends on who's driving...
*Disclaimer: I'm not expert! But I play one on T.V. LOL

Active rest.
If your legs are aching, do treadmill/eliptical @ 3-4mph just to stretch.
If it's your upper body, take a nice swim.
As long as you're not putting stress on your body during these sessions, they will help you recover faster.
Also make sure you're sleeping/eating right!

Please post the links to these studies that you are referring to and those who did the studies. Thank you.

Please, I was talking to Emma. Whatever your dealings are with the poster is your business not mine.

I'm no expert here, but what has worked significantly for me in relieving soreness is stretching and then taking an ice bath/cold shower after training. It's not fun, but you get used to it after a while. I started having them when training for my first marathon and have continued the practice with my current training regimen. I've found that it decreases recovery time and has lessened the amount of soreness I have in the couple days after a hard workout.
