It's not the doing it that hurts her, it's the knowing about it that does. By telling her, you hurt her. It's really selfish to tell her, since you're only trying to make yourself feel less guilty.
Unless there's a chance she could find out about it. Then it's best to hear it from you first.
That said, don't do it again. If you keep it up, then
1) She'll find out eventually, and
2) You don't really care about her as much as she thinks you do.
So don't do it again.
