I am new to body building. I am 34..I used to lift wieght in high school, but have not been into really making a physical chang with myself untill now. I am running into a problem with my neck every so often... My neck seems to stiffin up every once in a while. I am not lifting heavy..I dont know what the problem is..I am just wondering if anyone runs into this same problem...And what do you do about it?

Could be from bad form. What exercises are you doing when it happens?

I have a pinched sciatic nerve in my cervical spine. My radiologist gave me a few exercises to perform every morning and before bed. I rarely get a "flare up" to where my neck is in pain. All of these exercises can be performed on your bed. Keep in mind these exercises were suggested for my problem. They may not work for you.

Lie on your bed to where just your neck and shoulders are unsupported:
Slowly turn your head left to right
Slowly move your head up and down
Slowly rotate your neck clockwise then counter clockwise

Also I find that loosening up the traps takes some tension off the neck. Roll your shoulders for a couple of minutes each morning.

If your condition gets worse or remains unchanged, see a doctor.

I was having that problem early on and my trainer said it was because I was helping myself lift with my neck, so when I learned to relax while lifting it quit.
