Soda pop

Hey all, I'm trying to get my self straightened out and I am wondering if soda pop is really bad for me. I seem to hit a wall everyday in the afternoon. I try not to drink pop, and I do drink water throughout the day, but sometimes a pick-me-up of caffeine sounds pretty good.
Any thought?

I like to enjoy a diet Mnt. Dew or Sprite Zero from time to time. Diet soda is perfectly fine IMO. I like to avoid the sugary versions of these sodas however. A lot of empty calories in regular soda.

Drink coffee/tea (easy on the milk/sugar). You'd be surprised how many calories you can shave off your diet by cutting your soda intake or eliminating it entirely. With the goal of weaning yourself off of soda, a smaller step to take would be to drink diet instead of the regular kind, then moving away from soda entirely.

Sodas like Coke also contain phosphoric acid regardless of whether they are diet or regular, and acid is linked directly to dental caries. I lived on the stuff through high school, and in retrospect I think it's a small miracle I didn't gain any weight.

Yeah then you're ok. Just try and avoid their sugary counter-parts and you'll be a-ok.

I see no problems with diet sodas every now and then. Especially diet 7-up. Not phosphoric acid, no sugar. Omg but it's got SPLENDA! Give me a break. I think I'll continue to drink diet soda and see no ill side effects thank you very much.

There has been a lot of research coming out lately about people who drink diet soda being heavier than those who drink regular. Something about the body being tricked by the artificial sugars or something. So, imo, both diet and regular sodas are the devil. :-)
I used to be a Coke addict and went cold turkey. Once you're over the initial cravings you won't miss it.

Stick around here for a few months, and you'll find that 99.9% of the things that some folks will say are bad for you are eaten/drunk regularly by half of everyone else on the list.

Fact is, there are few things that are all that bad for you in moderation. A few cokes a week are fine -- a few a day will make it more difficult to reach your goals.

As someone is sure to point out at some point in this thread (so it might as well be me!), Arnold got his amazing body by regularly supplementing his diet with pizza and beer.

All things in moderation...

Everything in moderation. One a day isn't going to harm you.

Aside from that, i'd just get some green tea or caffiene pills (or like said above, coffee minus alot of the sugar/milk or whatever creamer you choose.) If you find yourself getting tired, maybe theres not enough carbs in your diet before you go to work. You should include carbs in your breakfast and lunch especially.

How about some bread, pasta, oats, fruit, something with CARBS in it for a meal? But no, one can a pop (soda pop, pop, juice, whatever the hell you people wish to refer it as) isn't going to harm you.

Dark colas have a pH level a hair above battery acid. If you are feeling sluggish in the afternoon, track what you had for lunch. How many cabs, protein, fats did it have? What did you eat when you didn't feel sluggish? For example, if you ate hard-boiled eggs, a pear and almonds and felt great after, then that meal was good for your individual nutritional needs at that time of day. Once you find that meal, stick with lunches with similar nutrient percentages.

No, it's the fact that because the diet soda contained 0 calories, the people drinking it figured they were saving calories, thus eating more.

I posted this before, here it is again. Ps. I don't think diet is too much better.

What Happens to Your Body Within an Hour of Drinking a Coke

Do you want to be healthy? Drinking soda is bad for your health in so many ways; science can?t even state all the consequences. Here?s what happens in your body when you assault it with a Coke:

Within the first 10 minutes, 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. This is 100 percent of your recommended daily intake, and the only reason you don?t vomit as a result of the overwhelming sweetness is because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor.

Within 20 minutes, your blood sugar spikes, and your liver responds to the resulting insulin burst by turning massive amounts of sugar into fat.

Within 40 minutes, caffeine absorption is complete; your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, and your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream.

Around 45 minutes, your body increases dopamine production, which stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain ? a physically identical response to that of heroin, by the way.

After 60 minutes, you?ll start to have a sugar crash.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:
How many sodas have you had today? How about your kids? As of 2005, white bread was dethroned as the number one source of calories in the American diet, being replaced by soft drinks.

The average American drinks more than 60 gallons of soft drinks each year, but before you grab that next can of soda, consider this: one can of soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar, 150 calories, 30 to 55 mg of caffeine, and is loaded with artificial food colors and sulphites. Not to mention the fact that it?s also your largest source of dangerous high-fructose modified corn syrup.

Let?s take a look at some of the other major components of a can of soda:

Phosphoric Acid: Which can interfere with the body's ability to use calcium, leading to osteoporosis or softening of the teeth and bones.
Sugar: It is a proven fact that sugar increases insulin levels, which can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, premature aging and many more negative side effects. Most sodas include over 100 percent of the RDA of sugar. Sugar is so bad for your health in so many ways, I even created an entire list outlining 100-Plus Ways in Which Sugar Can Damage Your Health
Aspartame: This chemical is used as a sugar substitute in diet soda. There are over 92 different health side effects associated with aspartame consumption including brain tumors, birth defects, diabetes, emotional disorders and epilispsy/seizures.
Caffeine: Caffeinated drinks cause jitters, insomnia, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, elevated blood cholesterol levels, vitamin and mineral depletion, breast lumps, birth defects, and perhaps some forms of cancer.
Tap Water: I recommend that everyone avoid drinking tap water because it can carry any number of chemicals including chlorine, trihalomethanes, lead, cadmium, and various organic pollutants. Tap water is the main ingredient in bottled soft drinks.
Clearly, the over-consumption of sodas and sweet drinks is one of the leading causes fueling the world-wide obesity epidemic.

One independent, peer-reviewed study published in the British medical journal The Lancet demonstrated a strong link between soda consumption and childhood obesity. They found that 12-year-olds who drank soft drinks regularly were more likely to be overweight than those who didn't. In fact, for each additional daily serving of sugar-sweetened soft drink consumed during the nearly two-year study, the risk of obesity jumped by 60 percent.

Here?s another sobering fact if you?re struggling with weight issues: Just one extra can of soda per day can add as much as 15 pounds to your weight over the course of a single year!

Other statistics on the health dangers of soft drinks include:

One soda per day increases your risk of diabetes by 85 percent
Soda drinkers have higher cancer risk. While the federal limit for benzene in drinking water is 5 parts per billion (ppb), researchers have found benzene levels as high as 79 ppb in some soft drinks, and of the 100 brands tested, most had at least some detectable level of benzene present
Soda has been shown to cause DNA damage ? courtesy of sodium benzoate, a common preservative found in many soft drinks, which has the ability to switch off vital parts of your DNA. This could eventually lead to diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson's
If you are still drinking soda, stopping the habit is an easy way to improve your health. Pure water is a much better choice, or if you must drink a carbonated beverage, try sparkling mineral water with a squirt of lime or lemon juice.

There is absolutely NO REASON your kids should ever drink soda. None, nada, zip, zero. No excuses. The elimination of soft drinks is one of the most crucial factors to deal with many of the health problems you or your children suffer.

If you struggle with an addiction to soda, (remember, sugar is actually more addictive than cocaine!) I strongly recommend you consider Turbo Tapping as a simple yet highly effective tool to help you stop this health-sucking habit. Turbo Tapping is a simple and clever use of the Emotional Freedom Technique, designed to resolve many aspects of an issue in a concentrated period of time.

I wasn't throwing a **** fit, you made a bold statement with no studies/knowledge to back it up. Simply, "sodas are bad". Next time, be more thoughtful when posting.

Where have you shown through "studies/knowledge" that cokes arent bad for you? Oh wait, i guess your "love for soda pop" makes you a credible source...once again, calm down.

Use the search button to review numerous studies that have been posted in the past due to chronic threads such as these. Upon review you'll find that most studies are always biased/state the obvious that phosphoric acid can lead to possible bond density degredation and/or osteoporosis.

You're simply talking out of your ass now, putting words in my mouth. Quote where I stated that I was a credible source because I love sodas so much. I stated that diet sodas every now and then are fine. Cry about it.

So damn true.

Anyway, to the OP, I drink Red Bull before I work out on a regular basis. Now to be fair to Red Bull it does not contain high fructose corn syrup (it is glucose based), but is still great before I workout. I've continued having it on a cut and have just recently taken it out only because I am trying to drop to around 5-6% bodyfat. However, I made it to 8-9% bodyfat (using the Jackson 7-point caliper method) without a problem.

For most people, that'll do the trick. Again, as long as it's not excessive, you'll be fine; your body will only produce fat from it if you're inactive, whereas it will use it as energy if you're active.

I know muscle and fitness just came out with a little blurb on the studies of people who drink diet pop serveral times a day are more likely to be overweight. And in the news lately they have reported that the artificial sweeteners actually make you crave real sugar...but who knows about our media lately.

I got tricked into doing this fad diet, and totally quit all liquids besides water and the cleansing liquid for 10 days, so I don't know why I can't do it now! Ugh!!!!!

You don't need any other liquid besides water. Water is your best friend, add some lemon or lime juice to it and then it is your butt buddy.

You get the point. Regardless of the studies, facts, anything, having a can a day (even if your not active and not working out/cardio/anything) is most likely not going to hurt you.

Is it good for you though? No. But it's not going to turn your world upside down if you keep it in MODERATION.

Everyone in this thread needs to chill out. There are better solutions than drinking the diet pop or any pop, noone will argue that.

i actually did a fairly large report on the effects of soda, and it is pretty bad, truthfully.

however, most of its negative effect is in the form of tooth decay (because soda has such a low ph (meaning its very acidic) that it eats away at the enamel) but it doesnt sound like thats your concern)

anyway, if soda is your only cheat food, im sure its not going to kill you to have it once in a while.

however, from what i have researched, mountain dew is possibly the worst for you, while root beer is one of the better ones.

also, if you can find it, you might consider "Jones Soda" (they have all sorts of flavors) because instead of high fructose corn syrup (which has been shown to lead to diabetes) they use Pure Cane Sugar, and less of it (proportionatly)

anyways, hope this helped, i enjoy sodas occasionally as well, and dont see TOO many negative effects.
