Eating right on deployment

I'm deployed right now to Iraq and all I have is the chow hall, which 99% of the time EVERYTHING is fried.
Even their salads are only made up of iceberg leaf...How am I suppose to get the right meals if there is really nothing of nutrition offered?
The only good thing is breakfast where they offer oatmeal and fruits.

I'm working on buying a small frigde in my room so I can bring back milk for shakes, but can I get all the things I need out of a protein shake?

Any advice would be great, maybe some from the guys/gals that are deployed or have been deployed?

Thanks!

First, thank you for your service to this country.

Second... thats rough. I think it will be tough. Its going to be rough to get all your nutritional needs out of just protein shakes.

When I was over there last year I relied on a lot of supplements but I did get a lot of whole food meals as well.

For breakfast we were only allowed 2 eggs so I would go through the regular line and get 2 hard boiled and then I would go to the short order place and get 2 over easy. I would also get a huge bowl of oatmeal.

Lunch there was usually chicken, yes they were frying it but it worked. I would make a sandwich out of that and get some pasta and brocolli.

Dinner I would either go to the sandwich bar and get a turkey sandwich loaded with meat or sometimes they would have tuna in the salad bar(No mayo added) Also sometimes they would have some decent choices like salmon or fish.

In between is where I relied on the supplements. I would order MRP's and protein bars. Buy some tuna from the PX and usually at breakfast they would have out the packets of instant oatmeal. Take a couple of those everytime you are in there. They are an easy carb source throughout the day. Just put it in a water bottle add water and chug. You are really going to have to sacrifice taste and luxery while you are over there. I feel for you man, summer is around the corner. What FOB are you on? Good luck man and if you have any more questions just let me know

Wow, thanks for this...Really helpful.

I'm on Camp Victory right now. What about you? MOS? Still in the service? FOB?
It's not bad here but the chow hall stinks big time! They don't even offer real eggs.
