Nasty protein powders! YUCK
Hey,
Wondering if anyone can help me here. I'm trying to lose weight and build muscle with good old fashioned nutrition... but the big question is do I have to take protein powders to build muscle?
I really dont get on with them, they make me feel sick (protein bars have the same affect)...
Is there anyway to build muscle naturally without protein powders/bars - or eating nothing but chicken all day?

You don't have to do protein powders if you get in your protein with food. I get my 140g of protein w/o having to drink the powders.
Chicken, tuna, lean beef, turkey bacon, turkey sausage, cottage cheese, crab, shrimp, lobster, veggie patties. . .

Ok, that's a good start...
So what does an average day's food look like - do you eat a handful sized amount of protein 6 times a day?

You can divide your protein portions evenly throughout the day, making sure you get proper post WO nutrition. I tend to eat about 25-30g of protein per meal and get 160 g a day. Just eat a piece of chicken or fish or eggs or something like that at each meal. You don't absolutely have to supplement with powders.
I've had unflavored protein powder before...that stuff is RIDICULOUSLY nasty. Like super glue!

do you get stomach aches? Just wondering if it is a lactose issue, OR if you have been using a powder that has concentrate listed on the package. You should try an isolate if you can, as soon as I did that a while back I've been bloat/gas free (sorry TMI). And if it's the taste you should try Dymatize.... some great flavors out there.

Thanks guys! Seriously though I cant handle the taste of any other them, they leave a really nasty aftertaste in my mouth I just cant shake...
I'm going to try the completely natural route and see how much muscle I can build with lots of chicken, eggs etc
If it doesnt work, I'll just have to hold my nose and down some powders instead

try optimum nutrition whey protein, it's actually very good. I've tried chocolate and strawberry, strawberry was pretty nasty but the chocolate is yummy. You can add peanut butter and/or banana and it makes it even better, it tastes like a normal chocolate shake. Plus it comes with 7g of glutamine per scoop which is pretty sweet.

I hardly use powders any longer. I keep a jug around if I am short on time, however, I stick to whole foods 99% of the time and have had excellent results.

Think I'll stick to the wholefoods too... until I really dont see anymore muscle developing. I just cant stand them - they all leave a really nasty taste in my mouth and they never really mix well.
Might have to do the bars - but they dry me out lol!

You'd only need to quaff down the shakes if you can't get enough protein from real food. The powders don't offer any nutritional benefit over real food from a muscle building stand point.
I'm another who doesn't use supplements. It takes some planning, and a lot of chicken and tuna

I'm not a huge fan of most Protein Powders - artificial flavors, sweeteners, and thickening agents. *yuk* But, I do admit (in spite of being lactose intolerant) Optimum Nutrition Chocolate mixed with a teaspoon of instant espresso is a quick fix to my occasional chocolate cravings! *yummy* And, I usually stay away from bars because they're so high in sugars.
On a regular basis I use Vitol 100% Egg Protein (2tbs = 24g protein) - It's All Natural and the only added ingredients are Bee Pollen, Natural Pineapple Enzymes (papain/bromelain), and Natural Vanilla. ~ When I'm on a diet that allows for carbs, I mix it into my oatmeal "or" into a juice/fruit smoothie.
