It's all about intensity, so there is no right number of hours. Also, diet is absolutely crucial for weight loss. Simply cutting back calories won't do it. I guess that's the main reason your friends do not lose weight.

Diet factors hugely into this. If your friends are working out hard and under eating, they won't get anywhere.

you lose mass by creating an energy deficit. this you can do by either eating under maintenance or increasing your energy expenditure, or both.
when you say they 'diet' - do they really? how much and what do they eat? do they count calories?
when you say they 'exercise' - what do they do? do they walk on a treadmill? lift weights? run?
the higher the intensity, the more calories you burn which will aid in fat loss, IF the diet part is in check. it really comes down to how much you eat. you could spend an hour exercising and burn ~300 calories and then drink a couple of bottles of beer (or eat cookies, or oatmeal . . .) and fill back up.

i workout for no more than 1 hr 6 days a week. i alternate cardio with weight training days. i've noticed that in the past when i have combined cardio and weights on the same day i get way too burnt out. i think this is a happy balance: 3 days of weights and 3 days of cardio

For me diet has been the single largest factor in losing weight. I was weight training and doing massive amounts of cardio with no progress. Cut back to just the weight training for three months (no cardio - yea!) and completely changed my diet - and dropped weight. I work out about 5-6 hours a week. I just added cardio back, but only 30 minutes 3x per week for cardiovascular health, no other reasons.

Yeah, that's her forum signature, it wasn't directed at you
And no, you look great! You may even want to rethink that 118 pound ideal weight. You may be perfect at a muscular 125 pounds.

you need to get a handle on your diet which means you need to know how many calories you should be taking in to lose. From there you can plug in your diet on fitday.com or thedailyplate.com and formulate it. You are going to have to weigh and measure your food for a while to get the hang of the portions you should be eating.
it's all about the diet

Yeah, track your diet and see how the calories and macros pan out. It does look like you may not be getting enough good fats. That'll affect your skin and energy levels.

yes caloric intake and caloric output is the best way to estimate weight loss. 1 lb of fat is about 3500 calories. Remember you must put out more than you put in to lose weight. Also, people forget that you burn calories throughout the day just doing regular activities (even at rest) If you want to lose weight i would definitely concentrate on your cardio. Resistance training helps muscle growth but it does have that great of an impact on weight loss. As far as overtraining is concerned the current ACSM guidelines on cardio training are 30 minutes of moderate intensity (cardio) exercise 3days or PREFERABLY all days of the week. The best way to measure intensity is Heart rate. I would keep mine between 60-80% of my max HR you can calculate this by using Karvonen's formula.
