Looking at military service as a post hs option

So I am not sure whether I want to enlist or go to an ROTC program but I do want to serve in the Air force or the army. Now as of now I want to do something like search and rescue, rangers, or something like that? Anyone have any experience that can offer insight on those things? Should I get big? Or just get as much strength as I can and let size come with it?

Thanks for the help

you cant just be a ranger.....its alot harder than that. You can try to get a RIP (ranger indoctrine program) contract for the army, but you still have to pass the school. It's not a cake walk.

I enlisted out of HS and it was one of the best things I've ever done. My time in the Army gave me drive, determination, and most of all motivation to make something of myself in the civilian world so I wouldn't have to do that sh*t anymore! I got my ugrad paid for and my grad school is also getting placed on the State's tab. Not too shaby in my opinion. Just make sure you understand all angles of the decision. Good luck with whatever you choose.

This is so true.
Ive been in for a couple years now and as a Staff Sergeant I can honestly say Im a better person. I also came in right out of High School so i got it put into me young too. I got that drive and motivation that I didn't have before. Its not for everyone and thats why theres 3,4,5,6 year enlistments. Basic training isn't hard, but you'll be pushed and tested.

And if its being a Ranger you so chose to be, then it'll be off the Airborne School, and then RIP. Once in a Ranger Bat, you'll have the oppertunity to go to Ranger School.

Best of luck with your choice.

I just enlisted into the Army reserve and will graduate June 14th then ship out to Ft. Knox the 16th. Going to basic and completing your AIT will delay you entry into college untill secong semester, so plan on registering for the fall semester of 09. I also plan on doing ROTC thus recieving SMP (simultanious membership program) benefits, like not being deployed during college. Reserves is looking like a great way to possibly start a military career you should certainly consider it.

^^^ What he said!

Nobody will care how much you can bench, or how big your arms are. They will care how fast you can run. How far you can go with 50-100 lbs of gear. How quickly you can drag your injured buddy to safety.

You'll have time for bodybuilding after boot camp, but until then your goals should be cardio, endurance, and bodyweight exercises.

Why not the Navy go SEAL, SWCC, EOD, Riverine Warfare lots of programs. The Navy is offering several programs out there in Special Operations where they are dedicating whole bootcamp division to the training and specializing in special warfare operators. The teams development is now the main goal in navy. The best information you can get about enlisting is going to a recruiter and talking ro them about going into the service but if you want to know what goes on in training or what you have to do, and or need to do I can answer you navy wise.

USAF Pararescue. Air Force Special Operations Command's pararescuemen, also known as PJs, are the only Department of Defense specialty specifically trained and equipped to conduct conventional or unconventional rescue operations. These Battlefield Airmen are the ideal force for personnel recovery and combat search and rescue. Here is the minimum requirements to becoming an Air Force Pararescue member.
http://www.stewsmith.com/afpj.html
Keep in mind when you join the military and attempt to take on one these careers and for some reason you don't meet all the requirement or cannot complete the coarse for ANY reason you will be washed out and have to take another career field. So if you think you can endure the training and will have no problem physically or mentally passing the coarse and are 100% sure this is what you want to do with you life, than go for it. if your having second thoughts about it you still want to join the military, go with ROTC.

Also check out this site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Force_Pararescue

Pay special attention to this paragraph;
The process of becoming a "PJ" is known informally as "the Pipeline." (Even more informally as "Superman School.") Successfully completing it takes about two years of intense physical and mental effort. Of the dozens who begin the process, only the most determined, sometimes as few as four to six, graduate but almost over 80 percent drop out from each class.

Good luck with your decision!
