I have a home gym, but I'm also a member of a commercial gym. I've been going to the commercial gym mostly lately.

I was just getting into my teens when the "bad girl" groups were hot. Ronnie Specter though was my all time favorite. The bad girls today make the ones I grew up with look like saints.

In real life I am seeing more women hit the weights, there are several senior citizen groups in various gyms that do attract women. But the overall prejudice towards women lifting is still there.
The free weight area is still the domain of the testosterone laden gender. We are encroaching on their boys club. Many do not like it. They go to the gym to escape their wives and girlfriends and want to grunt and throw weights around and act like alpha males (present company excepted). Sure they like to look at the cardio bunnies, but the free weight area is theirs. It does take some "balls" for a woman to walk in their territory and lift. Women in the free weight area take the locker room atmosphere away. Not to mention women still get the lift light/ton of reps, don't want to get big speil out of well meaning but misinformed idiots. I mean people. It is intimidating. However, once there, a lot of guys change their minds and become very supportive and look at women lifting in a different light. But it takes some guts. And serious lifting, not the namby pamby stuff.
And of course when you join a gym they only walk you through exercises on the circuit and cardio machines. That doesn't help. Very few women will even go to the free weight area because they have no clue what to do, weight rooms were always off limits in the past, and they generally have no one to show them.
I see women (all ages) watching me work out with my trainer all the time. They're on the cardio machines and I'm lifting some weight that's making me crosseyed. That has prompted some of them to talk to my trainer or others at the gym. They may hit the circuit machines more as a result, that's progress, but some have started venturing into the free weight area, which is good. Until it gets crowded
|
At both of the gyms I go to, there are actually a fair amount of women, more than I expected, in the free weight areas very early in the morning (5 or 6 AM) and a couple may be 40ish or 50. I think its because the gym is much less crowded then and thus less intimidating, plus I think they are more experienced and dedicated overall. It takes gumption, discipline and a real desire to succeed to get out of bed and train that early. The entire crowd is generally older...30s and up. The ladies train alongside everyone else and really no one pays attention.
At night, its almost seems off limits. The testosterone thing is intimidating I'm sure and there are too many young guys walking around acting like they own the place. The few women who do wander over who are not just tagging along with their boyfriends generally do a couple of sets of legs or biceps and triceps and then high tail it back to the "ladies" side of the gym. The personal trainers don't even bring their clients over here which exacerbates the problem.
I laughlingly call the nights "sexual segregation time" and its really a shame.

LOL! I work out at night, and have no problem going into the free weight area. Since I am a weightlifter, I consider it my area as well
It is very true, there are alot more young, testosterone-laden dudes at night! It was intimidating at first

I'd love to see the look on his face if you walked up to some 20 year old testosterone laden dude in a wife beater and asked him for a spot on the bench press.

You better not evaporate because I will miss you! Chain yourself to the weight bench when the clock ticks midnight on the eve of your birthday just to be sure
