Abs
With the exception of losing body fat to get the abs to show through, can you help make them show by toning them (many reps, low intensity) or do you have to train and make them bigger . because I don't want big abs just toned and im wondering if even toning them will help while loweing body fat.

If you want Abs to show through then hit the cardio hardcore. Low body fat is key to seeing theose abs. Training them will help bring them out as well. Train them 2-3 times per week and hit all parts of them. Do 15-20 reps of 4 sets for ab training.

Running will cut those abs you will naturally flex your tummy ....iAlso when you hit cardio concentrate on your abs and flexing them as long as you can the entire time. personally work on my abs everyday. That is the quickest muscele to recover...But ive also had 3 children and im determined to get my tummy toned again.

Of course you have to train them to make them bigger. I hate that phrase "abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym". People always interpret that as you can completely ignore your abs and just diet and you'll have a HUUUUGE 6-pack. Your abs need to be worked just like every other muscle in order to get some real mass.

Some of it is genetics also. I have a friend who can eat an entire pizza and still have a 6pac [yes, very jealous]

Sorry my friend... I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but lower the bf! There is no other way. What you get once you lower the bf??? Now that is where your hard work and genes come into play.
Abs are muscles... the only way you will SEE the muscle is to lower the fat around it to reveal the fruits of your labor.

Yes, but if someone's abs are so undeveloped, they will have to get to like 120 or less pounds before they finally see them. That's why it's important to have some mass their too. Abs aren't just made in the kitchen.

To see the muscle, people are right, low bf%. But to increase the muscle, how do you figure you get stronger in other areas of your body?
You got to have some resistance training. Many reps, low resistance or even none just your body doing crunches, can help a little, but to get a really nice thick 6-pack it's working your abs + low bf%.

That is exactly what I said. You need to lower your bf- (lowering your weight is not necessarily lowering your bf) but what you see once you do that depends on your genes and or your hard work. ;o)

What are the best exercises for abs? Also, should I add weight when training them?

obviously having low bodyfat is essential for your abs to show...
Personally, I like to train my abs with a lot of weighted stuff... one for example is doing weighted rope crunches (not sure if thats the proper name) : rep range no lower then 8 and no higher then 15 with the weights...
I'm not saying I only do weighted stuff. I also do higher rep exercises as well.
long story short, don't forget to train your abs with some weight too...

A lot of direct ab work is not necessary if you have a well-thought out workout plan.
For example deadlifts, squats, standing mil-press, powercleans, hangcleans, pushpresses are all wonderful ab builders.
Any extra ab work won't hurt, but is definetly not necessary if you do the basics.

although the big lifts like squats and stuff help your core, i've read that actual ab iso exercises are needed to get the actual 6pack look...ive also read that a guy time traveled using his little brothers PS3, so that could be wrong
anyone else not really looking for a sixpack but more of that flat stomach look?...or am i gay?
