Big Nog: "Please Randy, fight me."

The heavyweights took center stage in tonight’s UFC 81 co-main events, and two fighters on the brink of defeat stormed back for the improbable and stunning victories.

The come-from-behind wins capped off Saturday’s nine-fight UFC 81 event, which took place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The event aired live on pay-per-view.

In the night’s main event, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (31-4-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) made mixed-martial-arts history and became the first MMA fighter ever to win titles in both the UFC and PRIDE by defeating Tim Sylvia (24-4 MMA, 8-4 UFC).

With current heavyweight champ Randy Couture on the outs with the UFC and his future in the organization uncertain, UFC officials opted to award an interim title.

Sylvia, hoping to become the UFC’s heavyweight champion for a record third time, dominated the first and second rounds of the fight. Just minutes into the five-round battle, the Team Miletich fighter connected with an uppercut and a left hook that dropped his opponent. Sylvia continued the assault on the ground, and with Nogeuira bloodied and bruised, he told the wounded fighter to stand back up, wanting to avoid the ground with the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. The assault continued for more than two rounds.

Although Nogueira never fully regained his composure, he was relentless with his takedown attempts. He finally scored one in the third, swept his opponent, and then locked in a guillotine choke that forced the stoppage in a matter of seconds.

“That’s Mioutauro Nogueira,” Sylvia said, almost in disbelief. “Every fight he’s in, he gets his ass kicked for the first 10 minutes. You start getting comfortable fighting him, and next thing you know, he catches you. The guy’s a legend in this sport.“

Although he was in trouble throughout the fight, Nogueira finally felt in control in the third round.

“Once I got to the ground, I was comfortable,” Nogueira said. “I was ready for him”

With the belt strapped on, Nogueira made no secret of his wishes for a next fight.

“If Randy Couture — in the future — if he can come back to the UFC, I’d love to fight against him,” Nogueira said. “Please Randy, fight me.“

The defeat was tough to swallow for Sylvia. Never has a fighter come through the UFC who appreciated his champion status more than the Maine native. And never has a fighter so easily and sometimes inexplicably drawn the wrath of fight fans. Just when things looked like they might improve for the beleaguered giant, disaster struck again for Sylvia.

“I just started getting the fans going my way, and I come out here and lose the damn fight,” a remorseful Sylvia stated. “Hopefully, I’ll be back here real soon (anyway).“

Hopefully Nog could be Randy's last UFC fight before he goes after Fedor. If he wins both of those, he really needs to retire on top.

imo opinion for randy not to fight nog is disrepectful, it is like he is to good for nog. I think Nog would win.

It's a fight I would love to see actually, one I think we would have seen if Randy had not resigned. Unfortunately I can't see it happening now considering how difficult the Randy/UFC matter has become...obviously.

I'm afraid the sad truth is that Nog would beat Randy, ruining his chance to dethrone Fedor.

An interesting outcome, though, would be if Nog beat Randy, but Randy beat Fedor. That would f*ck up the rankings just a bit.

The UFC wuld never allow a title fight knowing that the champ is leaving the Org right after. Randy would have to sign another deal first.

they should fight yeah.... if randy beats nog, then there is only a man named fedor left... nog alwqays been on top and they never fought.. it would be a good matchup

Couture already has the UFC HW title, he now wants what some consider the #1 in the world, Fedor, who himself needs another top contender fight before he goes too long and people start doubting him. Fights against people like Choi are only gonna last for so long before people say "Enough already! Fight someone real again!"

They both need this fight.

White trying to take it to court and if he has his way he won't get to fight Fedor.

That and RC isn't getting any younger, he's closing in on his last fight. White might just try to stall everything out in court for as long as he can.

I'm sure Randy won't give a **** if it doesn't go his way, he'll probably break the rules and fight fedor anyway.

But yea, couture shouldn't have dodge the offer bodog had for him to fight fedor

He was confident that Zuffa was going to buy Pride and get Fedor. Two birds one stone, HW title and a shot at Fedor.

White shoulda signed Fedor, nobodies fault but his.

You obviously didn't see the thread with the bullsh*t contract details. No caving to demands about it.

Here's just a few of the 18 pages:

If Fedor wins he is required to fight again, no big deal.

BUT

If Fedor wins all his fights he is OBLIGATED to continue fighting INDEFINATELY for the UFC even after the contract is fullfilled!

However, if he loses a single fight the UFC has a clause to tear up the entire contract before it's completed!

There was 18 pages of this crap, White had the resources to make the fight happen, he didn't make it happen.

He failed.

I think Randy wants to fight Fedor and retire either as champ, or losing to arguably the best HW in the world. I don't think he wants to chance losing to another HW and taking away from his aura about him. If he lost to Nog, a fight with Fedor wouldn't make as much sense.

I don't think Fedor needs to beat anyone, he should just retire. He's beaten everyone, randy really doesn't mean much imo. Sure he won the title in the UFC weak HW division, but he's been ko'd by chuck twice, who's lost to rampage and jardine.

Like really, randy is awesome, but he's not that up there. I think fedor has beaten enough people(Crocop, randleman, nog, hunt) to call it a day and leave with his (in)perfect career.

edit* i should add, tho, if Randy can beat Nog he's in good shape to deserve a fight with Fedor.

Nog is the worst kind of opponent for Randy. A guy who can take a beating for 5 rounds and then submit you.

Very true. The only problem is Randy is 44 he has'nt got a lot more fights left in him and the bottom line is he has to fight for himself more than anything else.

The best scenario for me would be if randy "ended his contract" by fighting his last fight in the UFC against Nog. As for the "they won't let Randy fight for the title without signing him argument" my answer is: Make it a non title fight.

Royce Gracie fought Matt Hughes in a non title fight at ufc 60. Had he won Matt would have still kept his title. I don't see why they couldn't do that with Randy and Nog.
