yeah sometimes my small morning bowl hurts my stomach a little. Monster farts at the gym help make it feel better.

A lot of people have trouble with oats, whether or not it's the fiber. They aren't magic, so if they bother you eat something else.

You could be allergic to oatmeal (it's from the grass family, and many many people are allergic to it). If you are allergic to it, it will not only cause you discomfort, but raise cortisol levels, which is bad for muscle growth. Quinoa (pronouced keen-wah) is a better source of carbs because it has a higher protein content, is a complete protein unlike oatmeal, and is glutin-free (glutin is what you'd be allergic to). You cook it the same way as you would oatmeal. People must often pick up oatmeal instead because it's so common, but quinoa is a better choice overall. Try that and let me know how it goes. Good luck.

You should be able to find it at most grocery stores. It's not so uncommon that you won't be able to find it though.

I'm gluten intolerant and have a very hard time digesting oats. A gluten intolerance is different from a wheat allergy. Gluten leads to damage of the mucosa in the small intestine, which results in a malabsoprtion of nutrients and vitamins. Immunoglobulin A and and G are the antibodies responsible for an intolerance and IgE is responsible for an allergy. The characteristics of an allergy are asthma, anaphylaxis, swelling etc. and usually happen within minutes to hours. With an intolerance symptoms can appear over time. I have used Quinoa as my oat substitute and love it. I buy a hot cereal called quinoa flakes, I get it from Whole Foods.

I didn't know there was a difference between the allergy and intolerance. Thanks. Either way, quinoa seems to be the better option.

I have an oat intolerance myself. And from what I understand it is a different deal then a gluten allergy. This thread was very helpful to me so far and I will definitely try quinoa as an alternative.

However I did have a follow-up question that maybe someone would be able to answer. I understand that quinoa is a better source of protein then oats. However I have my protein pretty under control. The reason I think allot of body builders eat oats is that they are high in soluble fiber (which helps regulate insulin, and in turn build muscles) and are very low on the glycemic index. I need an alternative to oats that is also hi in fiber and high in low glycemic carbs. Does anyone know is quinoa fits this bill? Perhaps someone else knows of other alternatives that have not yet been discussed.
Please let me know. It?s really hard for me having an oat intolerance because every diet I read about seems to include oats (for good reason) and I need a good alternative.

Thanks in advance.

PS: My experience with oat intolerance is that it is not just an upset stomach but also some other symptoms that are really bad. If your stomach is upset and that’s it, you might not have an oat intolerance, although you know your body best of course.

Oats cause discomfort in my stomach as well. Even as little as a 1/2 cup serve once a day will cause stomach cramps and diahorrea.

Stopped eating oats and no problems since.

If your stomach is upset and that?s it, you might not have an oat intolerance, although you know your body best of course.

Here is some good info for you.

I was including oats in my first meal of the day. That meal had very little fat. 6 egg whites, an apple a banana and oats. From time to time I eat oats by themselves because I was rushed and slacking off on my diet. That?s how I really started to wonder if it was in fact an oat intolerance that I had developed. My DR. Had me eat oats at curtain times and keep a journal of symptoms and ended up telling me I have oat intolerance. I never get any of the same problems as long as I stay away from the oats.

Also I read through the info on quinoa, they seem to be lower in fiber but also lower on the gylcemic index. I think for what I am doing they are a great alternative to oats. I dare say I might even eat them over oats even if I could eat oats.
