What do you guys think of being a reserve deputy. Its an unpaid position, and more community service than anything else. I still want to be a full fledged cop, just curious if anyone else does this.

i have a question if anyone can help i applied last summer for a cop position in baltimore county passed the written and physical test over the summer. I knew the background check would take forever but seemed unusually long because last week they just finished it. I know because the investigator called me to ask if he could tell one of my references to give him a call because he had trouble reaching him. Anyway he told me the next step is the polygraph and physical by their doctor and it seemed like it would be sooner rather than later by the way he sounded. But does anyone know how long this could take for them to notify me I mean im just wondering if its gonna be months again before i hear from them again.
P.S. this is for the June Acadamy

thats how the NJ civil service test works. Take the test in the spring, dosent become active untill december of that year...bullshyt.
And vets get first preference. Meaning if they score 88 and u get a 99.99999 and they served in a war zone they are automatically ahead of you. This is why getting OTJ in NJ is quite hard these days.

Well if the regular police officer position doesn't work out, I will look into it.
I got a call from the detective doing my background investigation, and he wants to interview me tommorrow. So on short notice I have yet another interview....lol

its based on the hiring standards and pension/medical board
in indiana, all but the richest dept.s use a state pension system, which enacts the vision requirements

i personally cant stand that standard. if you wanna give them a pay benefit, fine...but hiring should be best man for the job. prior police experience is obviously good. prior military is a different animal. if anything, it should break a tie
eg: i score 99, ex-marine scores 90...i get the spot
i score 90(with only high school...nothing else noteworthy), ex-marine or college grad scores 90....they should get the spot

thankfully, a lot of departments around here are getting away from the free former military hiring points. with more departments gravitating to education, military experience is taking a back seat. i believe military experience is a factor to consider, but no more than a guy who has: bi-lingual skills, a degree, or maybe some other job related skill (certified paramedic for example)...

Hey guys! Hope all's well brothers! Just wanted to get a few quick pointers from you guys concerning the interview/oral interview/panel interview/ whatever type interview you call it.... I ended up passing the written test, so along with the score came the notification to be out there this coming tuesday (1-22)for my interview! Any ideas to help me get a feel for what to expect I would greatly appreciate!

I think the points for veterans are a good idea. They are earned through serving your country.
Even with that there's not guaranteed spot on the job. I get the points and I haven't made it on yet that's why I'm going back to school

serving our country was great, hence give them tie breaker points, or a pay bonus
but it's not fair to reward them on hiring points over a more qualified candidate
same as I wouldn't expect to enlist to the armed forces and get a higher rank from law enforcement experience

I think you and I are thinking of different things. The points I believe are to be used on the overall score from the physical, written, and oral exam sthis is the impression I have.
I don't believe the points are for the overall score you get. Perhaps it's applied different where you are
Here in CT it's 5 on the exam. Now I've taken tests where I missed the mark and my points didn't apply. The one process I made past the 2nd oral board my points came into play...perhaps the dept applied them to my overall score from the phsyical, written and oral.
I'll have to check further.
