volunteer firefighter in washington state
Been on the dept for 14 years. In our dept we sponsor a cadet program that you must be 17-18 to be in. Usually they are highschool seniors.
As far a women in the fire service as someone earlier was questioning I have worked with a few in out dept that I would let get my back on a line in a working fire anytime. And a few never or big worries if they ever where to be with me on a line. Then again I have had the same feelings for a few male f/f that have come through our dept. Hey take care out there and watchout for each other BE SAFE. PS keep lifting and eating healthy to cut down on the #1 killer of f/ftrs heartattacks.

I know it doesn't count yet, but hopefully will be in good enough shape to start applying to departments and taking cpats at the end of this year or very early '09. I've just got to get the endurance up on jogging since my buddy here says the local department's academy is a #$(*% the first two weeks.

Just wondering...
How long did it take you guys to get on with a department once you had your FF-I&II/EMT-B?

jpg.....It will all depend on each individual dept. I got hired knowing absolutely zero about firefighting. They put me through rookie school (FFI-FFII) and then sent me to EMT school. Other depts. wont even look at your paperwork unless you are a medic with FFI - FFII. I would go around (or call) Depts. that you are interested in and ask what they require. Good luck with your search.

Thanks for the reply. I called Dallas but I don't hav enough credits . I heard they're hiring a BUNCH. I'll go anywhere though. Doing the FF class now and I have the EMT-B out of the way with a clean driving/criminal record so I'm sure I can get on somewhere. Gotta keep on truckin!

I am actually applying to become a firefighter in GA. I have to do the written test and physical test next month. What do you think are the chances of getting the job? I don't have any related experience but I am in very very good shape so the physical aspect wont be a problem. I am making a career change thats why I have no experience. Do you think I may need to do volunteer work before they would consider hiring me?

Just passed my Engineers test!!!!!! At our Dept. they want as many engineers as possible. We will rotate driving Truck, Rescue for 2 shifts each. Best of both worlds really, get to fight fire, get to pump others. The pay raise doesnt hurt much either.

Are you in the Dallas area? Fort Worth is taking apps right now and will be hiring a lot. Mckinney is taking apps. Flower Mound is also.
I work in Carrollton... Get 45hrs of college and come test for us!

Hey there is huge demand in my county for retained firefighters.. it's been in all my local papers so they must be pretty desperate.
Is anyone a retained firefighter here? Would like some input from you guys.. I just want a general insight in the job. pros/cons etc. thanks.
