yah, go read generation ecstasy by simon reynolds. or look up the belleville three (derrick may, juan atkins, kevin saunderson). they started messing around with a 303 and making music with it that was more reflective of detroit in the early 80's than the motown sound was.

meanwhile, in chicago, frankie knuckles was playing disco samples over a 4/4 beat at a club called the warehouse. the music was called "music heard at the warehouse" or house for short. in new york, larry levan opened up the paradise garage, playing all night disco parties and his interpretation of "soulful" house.

this was all in the early 80's.

house/techno music was generally limited to black and gay parties. you could hear house music along with hip hop in the bronx and queens. the sound was picked up by northern soul dj's in the uk who were playing motown, philly soul and rare grooves, and now added another layer to their underground sound. uk bands in the 80's were also listening to detroit techno and experimenting with the same instruments. by the late 80's, new order, the happy mondays, the stone roses, human league, were playing ecstasy laced parties at the hacienda in manchester, and paul oakenfold had just returned from ibiza and brought the balearic sound into london. and it all blew up from there.

techno, house and hip hop all came from the ashes of disco- the techniques, beats, sounds, sampling and parties- were just a natural progression of the elements used by disco artists and dj's. true, there were european influences on the early pioneers, especially kraftwerk, but it is generally accepted that the roots of what we know today as techno and house (and the sub-genre of techno- trance) started in two american cities- detroit and chicago.

Saw Kevin Saunderson for the first time recently. Dear lord he was good. Not straight out techno, which is more my thing. But techno that was deeper and had much more melody. Hearing three different mixes of Good Life in one set was so amazing.

lol, there are so many mixes of good life its hard NOT to hear at least one per set...

i saw derrick may several years back. you can just hear the history and the depth of his knowledge through his sets. one of the first techno albums i ever got was innovator.. was the first time i had ever heard strings of life, and definitely not the last.

Strings Of Life...When I was first got into electronic music, that was one of the tracks that really got me going. I've heard Martijn Ten Velden open and close (in the same set) with that track...was amazing.

I'm still devistated I haven't gotten around to seeing Derrick May play a set, but at least Saunderson played some top remixes of Good Life (no filler). I definitely heard Eric Prydz's 2006 Edit (epic track), and someone else's remix, as well as what I'm pretty sure was the original.

Honestly, it was such an outright enjoyable set. I would kill to hear it again on a beach with about 50 or so friends who I know would appreciate every track as much as I would.
