Is it safe to take Advil before extracting wisdom teeth?

I'm having the wisdom teeth on my right side taken out a 2pm tomorrow (the other side the next week.) I'm not going to be put under, or given any gas. I'm just having the needles to freeze, and that's it. I was reading some where in these boards that some one took 3 advils an hour before they had their wisdom teeth pulled, in order to reduce swelling after. Is that smart? Won't that cause more bleeding, and perhaps dry socket? I don't know. Has any one here taken advil before having tooth extractions?

Better talk to your surgeon, but I believe it's probably not a good idea to do something "out of the ordinary" especially since you'll be going under. I have no clue what I'm say here; just for your safety!

I'm not going under.. I'm just having the freezing needles. that's it. I'll call the dentist in the am and ask. I was just wondering if any one here has done this. Thanks for replying.

I wouldn't do it, and yes, I do believe ibuprofen is a blood thinner. Save any meds for after the procedure and with your doc's approval.

I had the needle treatment, trust me you're not going to feel a damn thing. The needles are the worst part (obviously), but mine were actually impacting my sinus cavity so it felt great to have them out.

Oh man I would say go under, laughing gas made me say some of the funniest stuff ever! The dr showed me the tape a few days after and we were just cracking up...

reality now, I wouldnt take it.

Take 100-200 mg of Ubiquinol prior and after having them take it out then everyday for 2 weeks.

So I had them pulled. I was wide awake, with only local.. And I'm going back same time next week to do the other side. Joy! It was really nothing I haven't experienced ANY pain. The only discomfort was 2 needles that went into the roof of my mouth, and the side of my jaw/cheek. the other ones, i didn't feel a thing. And right now, i'm due to take the pain meds, So i feel a little bearable discomfort. (and no I didn't get any thing crazy, just some thing he said was a bit stronger than advil, I can't think of the name right now.) But these pills make me sleep. I was in bed all day today, and I had to force myself to eat. I couldn't do the soup thing any more, so I just made a bunch of soft boiled eggs, and put salt and pieces of ww toast.. mashed it all up, and it was good.

Thanks for the responses! When I get the other side pulled, I'll do it without the advil, and let you know if there is any difference in pain or swelling.

Yeah I was lucky enough to be put under while having my wisdom teeth removed. To be honest, the most painful part of it all was after the procedure. My stitches began to come undone after the procedure so everytime I moved my mouth it would nudge the stitches and it would be extremely painful (Try putting gauze (sp?) on a wound where the stitches are undone). After I had that fixed though it was a relatively painless!

I don't feel any pain what so ever. Absolutly no pain! I'm suprised. I guess I either have a high pain tolerance, or the dentist did a really good job? I dunno.

Yeah I was surprised at how relatively painless the process was other than the complications I had. The good part is, its nice getting to eat milk shakes and stuff all the time, the bad part is the liquid diet gets really old after a while! But it doesn't last for very long so its not all that bad. How come you didn't have all 4 removed at once?

Maybe I'm just a wuss....but I think of those shots in the roof of my mouth as one of the most painful/uncomfortable moments of my life. My dentist told me: "Brian, I'm not going to bull**** you-this is going to hurt....don't bite my fingers." That anticipation probably didn't help I guess. Glad it went well for you though.

I had the IV, next thing I know I'm being brought out in a wheelchair. I was awake, but I don't remember ****. Plus my doc hooked me up with a ton of percocets, so that was nice

Yeah same here! lol The office didn't have any wheel chairs so my brother had to hold me up and walk me out. I was awake and I could kinda see in front of me and hear the doctor talkin to my brother, but I couldn't really walk or do anything other than look forward lol. As soon as I got in the car I passed out again

see, I'm the only one of all my friends who got mine done w/o going under-I think it was b/c mine were already partially in. They were pressing on my other teeth though and impacting my sinus cavity so it felt f*cking great to have them out, like a huge weight being lifted. I had a sinus headache for about 10 days leading up to them coming out.

My dentist is a pretty cool dude, he's only about 30 so he's doesn't mess around much, he wasn't lying that's for sure.

It didn't HURT HURT.. it was just a little uncomfortable. After he gave me that shot, i felt this bubble form in the back, close to my throat.. he did that one just after the side needle. I felt like my jaw was stuck. I was scared my throat would close as a reaction, and then my mouth couldn't open. We had to wait like 15 minutes, before he could open my mouth wide enough. Really weird.


Any one else get told not to drink water for a few days? I'm dying! I'm so used to 3L/day minimum, and now i'm down to a couple sips for my pain meds. This is the worst part for me...

Wow thats weird, I was put on a liquid diet for a couple of days including water, but thats it. No water? lol dunno if I'd be able to do that either
