    body fats %?

any guess on my body fat %? I know I carry a lot but yes I am still bulking and prolly won't stop till Feb/Mar. I started to cut down my carbs intake at night and started cardio once a week...

    a lil stats:

    25 yrs old
    2.5 month serious training
    170 lbs (150 pre bulk) on a 5'6" frame
    15.25" bicep (14 pre-bulk)
my lifts are pathetic so no need to post, I try to do MaxOT exept I do more sets...

    goals:

    160-165 ripped
    16" bicep after cutting phase

From what I see, it looks like your at about 16%. Your arms look pretty lean, but you have a little bodyfat in your chest, especially in the lower part.

2 yrs ago I was 170 all fat, waist was 35"+, then got down to 145 but still got lil bit of man boobies and gut left... but now 170 and waist is still 31"-32"...

High teens maybe 20 but who are you kidding about the 31--32 inch waist, not with that inner tube you are sporting.

Smile Objectifying the States of Muscularity

Remember though... 70% of your body is water, so if only 5 lbs. of you is water, what's the other 165 lbs?

I would say your bodyfat percentage is in the high teens (16-18%). It's difficult to see separation between the major muscle groups, hence the high estimate.

In the book "SLICED" (by Bill Reynolds & Negrita Jayde), the states of muscularity are objectified as follows (I'll summarize each):

    1. Full house = Over or near 20% bodyfat with no visible muscle definition and only a hint of separation between major muscle groups if those groups are very large. Basically a person in this state could be confused for a football linebacker. If you're higher than this bodyfat percentage, you'd be considered overweight/obese.

Here are some examples of the Full House state:

    Tankus: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=1874224

    CrazyMike: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=2272262

    2. Hard = Some muscle separation appears between delts and upper arm. Abs are still not visible.

Here's a picture of Railz in the Hard state:

    http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=1045047
    http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=2114990

    3. Cut = More muscle separation appears particularly in the chest and back, outline of the abs begins to appear slightly. Approximate bodyfat level = 12%

Here's are 2 examples of Abdominator in the Cut state:

    http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=1705834
    http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=1705878

    4. Defined = Muscle separations get deeper in the arms, chest, legs and back, and abs appear when flexed. Approx. bodyfat level = 10%

Here's an example of Abdominator in the Defined state:

    http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=2117293

    5. Ripped = Abs are clearly visible all the time, vascularity in arms is prominent, chest and back separation is obvious, and face is starting to appear more angular. Condition can be held indefinitely. Approximate bodyfat level = 7-9%

Here are some examples of the Ripped state:

    Railz: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=1371361

    Abdominator: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=2075745

    6. Shredded = Striations appear in large muscle groups when they are flexed. You look small in clothes, but look fantastic when you're not. Vascularity appears in lower abdomen and in the legs. Condition can be held for several days with careful dieting. Competitive bodybuilders often aim for this state for competition day. Approximate bodyfat level = 5-7%

Here are some example of the Shredded state:

    ShaneG85: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=1878949

    Freaker: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...&postid=470182

    Abdominator: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=2168597

    7. Sliced = Muscles and tendons begin to appear in the face when chewing, striations appear everywhere and vascularity appears everywhere. Bodyfat levels are close to 3% and subcutaneous water levels are near 0. Condition can only be held for a few hours at a time. Not a healthy condition to stay in due to lower water level.

Here's an example of someone in the Sliced state:

    http://forum.bodybuilding.com/attach...postid=2248100

Anywho, perhaps you can use this guide to determine how far you're progressing. If/when you decide to cut, make sure you give yourself 12-16 weeks to do it. It won't happen overnight, but the results can be striking when you get into the final 2-3 weeks.

Make sure you save that post for future bf% topics.
I went down to 'cut-very early defined stage' myself & that was with a 28.5" waist...I wasn't cutting for comp tho. Just enough to clean bulk & cut again for my holiday 3-4 months into next year.
I can only see very visable abs when doing a most muscular or flexing...Abs aren't very clear at all when relaxed.
    I guess i'm around 10.5...somewhere in between.

Waist size is different for everyone.
Layne has a set of abs with a rather large waist..compared to me & SK Had abs with a 28 waist.

Yeah, I may have to post it in one of my threads or maybe make an article out of it on the "Post Your Articles" forum.

SLICED is a great book. Anyone planning to compete (or even just cut/bulk) should add it to their library.

..as for the H20 thing, I'm just saying I tend to bloat a lot and retain water, on weekends where my day is not as structured like work days (wake up time/meal time/water intake) I usually weight 5lbs less...

dpman - I guess Im kidding all the pants/jeans and belts that I've been using since according to you they are not 31-32 size... again I wear 32" waist pants/jeans and are very comfortable. I have size 33"s and 34"s jeans but no way I can wear them without belts, I can but I'm done with the ghetto "pants-falling-drawers-showing" look anymore...

Try cutting back on the amount of sodium you have in your foods. Sodium attracts 8 times its weight in water, so if you monitor your sodium intake, you should be able to reduce the amount of water you're holding. Keep it under 2000 mg (i.e. 2 grams) per day. That's why people with high blood pressure should cut back on sodium because their blood volume increases due to the increased water volume.

Wow, this thread is old. Here's a link to my updated version of this thread. I have it on my website, so that way the links don't "die" after 5 years.
