One thing: there's nothing magical about the 5x5 scheme for EVERYTHING. 5x5 usually means that there is a very concrete PROGRESSION built into it, and it's easier to progress with weight doing sets...

I wouldn't. Too much gray area in 5/3/1 that is only filled in when you have some experience and knowledge of what your body responds to.
It's a fine program, though.

Should. If you're doing 5 sets of 5 at 275 for example...
5x5x275= 6875
3x5x275= 4125
About another 2750 lbs of volume added in with just those 2 sets.
