my orthopede and physical therapist both have me doing them in my ongoing knee rehab. i would like to think there is nothing inherently wrong with them.

deadlifts, alternating grips, will develop them quite nicely. imo, don't waste your time on isolation exercises. pullups and deads will take you where you want to go. just give it time.
