i've read that a beginner is someone who can progress each and every workout. an intermediate is one who can progress on a weekly basis. advanced requires more prolonged programming.

deadlifts, alternating grips, will develop them quite nicely. imo, don't waste your time on isolation exercises. pullups and deads will take you where you want to go. just give it time.
