I wouldn't do pulldowns to the rear - it can be risky so I can see why the trainer said that. Like someone else said, you can hit those muscles better with compound exercises.

It's only been three weeks, so give it some time. It's pretty normal to make fast strength gains when first starting out - my guess is that in about 3-5 months you will notice a change in the size...
