Its good to wear a belt, and u prolly will eventually. Not needed unless you are going to strain your back where you shouldnt. If youre in proper technique you wont strain it to begin with. I use one...

If I had my choice, I would do both. Why choose? Full range of motion is great though. But I would still do both. I use a box thats just about a foot an a half off the ground to judge my squat.
