What chazzy said. I like lifting, but I don't like trying to figure out my max's. Problem with that is, if you don't know where your boundaries are, you can't push them effectively.

it's possible you're flexing your back somehow when working your hams on these machines. No, they're not necessary. nothing is ever necessary. Learn proper for on the basics: squats, deads, etc.
