Ever heard of Clean & Jerk? You just don't do the jerk bit. Just yank the barbell to your shoulders, briefly rest the barbell on your shoulders, then back down again
Looking at that, I would say that doesn't hit your traps. However, I've never tried it, so I'm definitely going to give that a go before dismissing it completely :)
It's different for everybody. Some people find them uncomfortable to do, some don't.

I used to deadlift and squat at my University gym, but since I left Uni, my local gym doesn't have barbells, so I'm resigned to using leg press machines, and dumbell lunges.

Your method sounds like Stiff-legged deadlifts, whilst his sounds like a normal deadlift.
