None of my runing shoes, trail or otherwise offer any ankle support, the shoe ends below my ankle joint. Operators are also probably hauling gear a lot of the time, I have seen photos of "operators"...
I would think it would be less likely to get an ankle injury trail running in vibrams because you are closer to the ground and less likely to roll an ankle.

I like the kso the best, as far as breakin them in, worry more about getting your feet conditioned than breaking the shoes in.

I use a scramble rash guards and I have several pairs of shorts in the rotation. I have some ugly punchtowns that actually work really well. Sprawl, cg, scramble are all in the rotation.

Vibrams are awesome, I wish I'd checked them out back in 2009 after I read the running book that really brought them into the fold. Oh well, better late than never.
Money no issue, I'd get some neon yellow Nike Romaleos.
That being said, I use Wei Ruis when I lift heavy, sometimes I use vibrams too.

Inov8 bare-xf will work well for you as wi the reebok crossit 2.0 or whatever at called.
I use te inov8s for similar workouts with no problems. Vibrams are cool too.
If you have a "leg" day, you don't need these shoes, save your money. Srs.
I got my Wei Ruis for like 50 bucks and really enjoy them.
If your 3 mile is going to be 18mins, your 1 mile will have to be better than 6mins.
