stick with the calipers imo, it took me a while to get them consistent, but once you read about them(couple articles on bodybuilding.com) you'll be much better off.

Can you overtrain your arms by doing a split such as this: Day 1: chest/tris day 2: back/bis day3 off day 4: shoulders day 5 off day 6: legs day 7: off
