I don't really like chrome plates because you can't really repaint them.. You can compare the wear on my eleiko plates, which doesn't look too bad on the chrome. The paint chips on the regular plates...

The old gym I was at had the same rack. It was really sturdy and heavy duty.

I'd recommend getting 2.5s. It's not going to save you much money and when you're starting out a 10 pound jump with 1-5 on each side is a lot.
