When I do my one max I usually do 3 of 135, 1 of 225, then I go for my max which is around 400. Pretty simple but I like it.
What about grip on the deadlift? Does a wider grip effect it at all?

Sure you can lift without that gear, but I wouldn't advise doing it all the time. I like switching up between using a belt and not using a belt.
